Racing Harts go bye bye!

Hey! Another New Hampshireite! =) Welcome to the boards, Gbourdon. FYI, I'm in Manch-vegas. =) There's a few of us hereabouts. Anyway, I know what you mean in that respect. =) In a pinch, I drove my old Volvo 740 in a freak blizzard, the wheels wrapped in summer tires (Toyo Proxie T1-S'), and scooted along okay. Or at least well enough to get to the Town Faire Tire, to get a set of winter tires on my older 14's for the car. ; ) Hehee. Growing up in New England gets you used to driving in the snow, but the reason I have for getting snows is because of others who DON'T have them, so I can avoid them when they understeer all the way across the road, headed for me. ;) It makes emergency manuvers that much easier, I suppose.

How bad can the the stock bridgestones really be? I don't want to shell out the bacon for snow tires. Plus I don't have anywhere to store an extra set of wheels. I've driven just about anything in jsut about any weather and haven't had much trouble. The only times I ever went off the road were because I was screwing around, and that was all rear wheel drive cars. I am going to see how bad it is before buying. (it's flurrying outside now....scared...)

How bad? The RE 040's are the biggest POS for winter i have ever driven ! The Toyo's on my Integra were bad, these were worse. They are straight summer tires, and as far as i know, they are not M&S (mud and snow) rated. I got stuck in the freezing rain last year when i jumped the gun and put the summers back on and almost died a thousand times driving home. I had to cave and put the winters back on because the snow and rain lasted a week.
PLEASE DO NOT DRIVE THE STOCK MSP TIRES IN THE SNOW. It will save you at least a Racing Hart or 2.
Fellow snow-belters, chime in anytime here.

Well, simply put, you CAN'T. The minute the surface of the tires meets snow, the car doesn't go anywhere.

What is this "NEw Found Land" you speak of? I never seen snow...I wish It would snow once in Florida! But I'm learning alot...I guess taking advice from a guy who lives in Newfoundland and has to deal with the harsh Canadian winter is the best way to go. Seriosuly, I would have keep my stock tires...then again I know nothing about winter preperation for cars! Thanks for the post incase I ever move up north or travel up north.

DO NOT DRIVE THE STOCK MSP TIRES IN THE SNOW - PERIOD!

Can't say it strongly enough. They're NOT all-seasons. They're NOT snow tires. They're fine for 3 seasons, but once it's below 30 degrees or AT ALL frizen you're going nowhere unless the wind or gravity takes you there.

Semperit Snowsports $72 each shipped from tires.com (Discount Tire) on P5 rims. Girth's a copycat! OK, truth be told,. we PM'd about the decision together...

Conti Extreme? Yep - has a GREAT reputation in the snow, BUT WAS INTRODUCED ONLY LAST APRIL! It hasn't SNOWED since then!!!... can't trust everything you read, but that said, given the tread pattern they shouldn't be TOO bad. ANYTHING all-season will be better than the RE040's. Call tirerack.com, they'll tell you. Ask for Oscar, he helped me out a bunch with snow tires for our other car.

And yes, there isn't an all-season made that can hang with real snow tires in the snow. Snows are that much better.

Oh - check tirerack.com - in their testing the "ice" tires (non-studdable) had better grip than studded snows on ice. By definition, to hold the studs in you have to have a harder rubber compound, which can compromise ice/snow traction... read up, there's great info on www.tirerack.com .

Good luck, all - and happy skiing! Can't wait to break out the RCS skates... and prayin' for some good blue-wax sunshiney days...

Well, if i lived in "FLOR-I-D-A" I probably wouldn't worry about "S-N-O-W" Either. Duh. j/k :)

All jokes aside, I couldn't even pull into my driveway with like a 5 degree incline with a measly two inches of snow in it with my MP3 and the Dunlops. Once the rubber gets cold, it's useless in snow.

the orange speed that originally came here for me, came on Boxing Day, Xmas. They couldn't get it off the boat because of snow. They towed it around by truck. The Dock is obviously perfectly flat but the car just wouldn't move without ruining the tires spinning like nuts. They basically had to put snow tires on it then and there due to it not wanting to move.

Seriously guys, if you have a snowy climate, don't tempt fate and screw around. Get them off!. Think of it this way. You'll be saving your good rubber for when you can really drive it, and you won't have to replace the really $$$ tires so often.

so when is a good time for the new england area peeps to switch to snow tires? now? me confused. first time living up in the snow area

Fine fine snow tires it is. Dammit. Holding off on the guages and the MBC even longer. Thanks for saving my fenders.

Flat_Black : I'm over in Keene right now but I run back and forth to portsmouth and concord a lot. Keep your eyes open for a blue streak of MSP!

Your fenders are one thing.....your life or someone elses are another.
Ping said it, no all season tire can hang with winter tires in the snow. The RE 040's aren't even all-season tires, they're summers.

My advice, get them installed on winter rims/steelies now. When it snows, and i mean snow that stays on the ground that requires you to shovel the driveway, get out ther and put them on. Jack it up yourself, or get them installed.

Save yourself the trouble of waiting until first snowfall to decide to go and get winters. Have fun waiting for hours, if you can even get an appointment then.

have you used the semperits before ping? I was looking at the pirelli 210 snowsports that have great reviews, but no feedback on the semperits

--If anyone is interested I can probably get a good deal on steel wheels from work......... The steel wheels off of Mazda6's will fit and we have a ton of them......If anybodys interested I will get more info.....let me know

I got my snow tires on steelie already. I guess my Q was whether to swap out my Racing Harts to snow right now?

i have potenza 92s on my car...can any one tell me how these are for snow (or tell me where to look it up?) thanks:D

MS MSP is right on the money. The biggest problem is getting the tires. If you wait until it snows....you'll be screwed because every other moron that waited is going to be wanting tires too.

Get them now, leave them in the shed, house, bedroom ( I really don't care) and when you have the type of snow that's sticking around....put them on. Simple as that.

Listen, to all the dis-believers. Leave your tires on ( get winters still ), and when it snows, and I mean SNOWS as in it stays on the road ( Not slush...SNOW, you know when roads are icey and have snow on top ) pull your car out of your driveway and drive 50 feet on a road that hasn't been driven on ( your making the first tracks ), hit the brakes turn the wheel, etc. It's that obvious you'll know we're not kidding. now imagine at freeway speeds with cars around.

That being said, I have never driven my SPeed in the snow. I'm only assuming the bridgestones are as bad as the Dunlops were on my mp3. And from what other people have told me...they are. I'll try my car once to see, but it will be in a safe and controlled way only out of curiosity. Not "oh it's snowing, I'm going to drive all the way to work anyways, and hope for the best" kinda drive ( DUMB )

I'd be willing to bet I could drive circles around most of you in the snow ( only because it's a way of life here ), and I've driven a lot of different types of cars/trucks with good and very Bad tires on them in snow storms and such. I'm the type that loves winter driving, and if it's a storm, I drive around just f'n around. No car has ever scared me or intimmidated me to the point where I said...no, it's snowing out, I'm not going anywhere with those tires on........until I got caught in the mp3 one night driving home from work. a 5 min drive took 30 mins, and I was spinning on even the flattest of roads while everyone else was driving around looking at me like...wtf is wrong with him?

I am completely with you newf- the dunlops are scary in the snow, and I have drivin in colorado for 12 years- DO NOT USE A SUMMER TIRE IN THE SNOW, you will wreck your car- if for no other reason than you can't avoid the other idiots sliding all over the place- I love driving in the snow, but not with the tires I have on now- Think I will get a set of the pirelli 210 snowsports- they are rated well on dry, wet, and snow....

anyone???

HORRIBLE. I had the misfortune of having those on my Integra. Useless as tits on a bull.
By buddy bought an Impreza last night that has those tires. will see what he says once it snows. He does have AWD though, but i bet they will still suck. Treadwear is 160. So it's too soft for winter IMO.
