questions regarding split second air for MSP

:
2000 ford focus zx3 turbo
hey guys, a buddy of mine has an 03 MSP and he has made a few mods to it. FMIC, manual boost controller, and exhaust with plans in the works to do an exhaust cutout right after the J pipe. now he has been going crazy for awhile talking about wanting to get split second air for this car. i have no idea what on earth that is but he wants it bad and his is coming up and i would like to snag it and surprise him with it but i need to know where to find it and whether or not im even getting the right thing. im curious about what exactly its supposed to do as well.

also another thing im curious about is how on earth you are supposed to tune these cars. surely there is some company that makes a chip for the ECU or a flasher to flash tune the ECU through the OBD2 port. the MSP cant be so different from my focus that you can just crank the boost up without tuning and expect it to hold together. with increased boost levels you gotta have a tune.

bah now i feel like a dum dum. i should have used some search-fu and googled it before asking ignorant questions. split second air is an air/fuel ratio controller that lets you adjust fuel trims at WOT. i guess that could be called "tuning" as well but then you have to take into consideration timing for a good tune as well. are those AFC's available for cheaper than $400. i mean i love mi amigo to death and everything but im not sure if im feeling like dropping 4 bills for his birthday.

you don't tune the ecu on these cars. you have to tune via a stand alone or piggy back unit. most people run a split second afc or ftc as it is by far the cheapest solution for the car. others have had success with the AEM FIC, and if you step up to the stand alone's; Haltech and Microtech seem to be popular choices. haven't seen too many megasquirt threads but that is an option too.

for most peoples needs, the split second is plenty unless you wanna run a lot of boost on stock turbo, or go bigger turbo. the trick is getting the RIGHT split second unit as they make them for many cars. you cant just get any old unit, have to make sure you get the one specified for Mazda FS.

Honestly, mine was a plug and forget for the most part. The user who sold me mine had the stock-super map on it and i didn't bother to change it. car ran much better after wiring it in, which is very easy to do even for total noobs to electronics.
