Questions from new MX- ownder

I have had a 1999 MX-5 for 7 years; just bought a nice 2007, with under 14K miles. Have a few questions for anyone that can help.

1. The manual recommends using 91 octane gas. Do you find that's needed?
2. I assume the head rest "roll bars" are decorative only. True? Can I get real roll bars added?

Thanks. Jim in Charlotte

Hi Jim,

Congrats on the new purchase. To answer your questions.

1) Yes. if the octane is not enough the CPU will retard the timing.
2) Little bit of both. What you see is the cover. Underneath are rollover bars. If you are looking for more substantial ones, try GoodWin Racing. He makes some different styles.

It's been a while since I owned our '06 Sport; but, I remember the wording in the manual was such that I ran nothing lower than 91. Granted, it's a bit more cost to run premium fuel through the car; but, I knew that the day I bought the car. All of our cars use 91+ fuels. The latest Miata we own really prefers 93, if we can get it.

I'm not into racing; so, the roll bar we had was OK. No changes were made.
