Pulled my intake manifold off, couldn't believe what I saw...

You may or may not remember, but about a month ago I posted that something bad had happened, and it turned out that I was a victim of the all-to-common VICS screw in engine problem.

Intending to tighten the remaining screws before they also worked their way loose, I went about removing my intake manifold this evening. Once I got it off, what I saw was not what I was expecting.

Not one, but three of the VICS valve plates had come loose, but the really strange part was that all of the screws were still in place. WTF? Evidently, the screws had backed out just enough for the plate to wobble around. Eventually, with enough vibration, the screw's threads had ground the holes in the plate big enough that it could fit right over the head of the screw.

The two plates that were chillin' in the manifold were so clean that I wonder if they had come apart when the car was still fairly new.

I stuck my head behind the engine and peeked into the intake ports of the cylinder head to check from more debris, and sure enough, there was half of the plate that fallen into the cylinder.

I ended up just pulling everything out. I removed all the plates, and all of the screws. I'll finish putting her back together tomorrow and see how she runs.

Wow.

Just wow. Hope she runs when you put 'er back together. (runs off to check his vin/build date to the recall notice again)

if you buy a brand new intake manifold by using the recall part number, it is pretty cheap compared to getting the regular part... plus there's some rumor going on about riveted plates... would love to see pics of that!

ugh...as someone who falls just outside the recall range for this issue, I have bad dreams about this kind of thing. Good luck on putting it all back together!

this happens a lot on the newer cars for all makes for some odd reason. the sentras had a huge problem with this too

I put it all back together today, and thankfully it's running like a champ. I think having the debris in the intake runner was definitely causing a loss in top-end performance.

I actually fall within the vin range for the recall. But I heard several times that if you've surpassed 40k miles or so without a problem, that you'll be fine. What truth there is to that I have no idea. I never got the recall done because at the time I didn't want my warranty voided while in for the recall. Been planning to do the removal myself, or do a manifold upgrade, but haven't got around to doing much of anything about it.

Does anyone know if mazda will still perform the recall service? Again, my vin does fall within the range.

Yeah, from what I've read, they should still cover it.

You have got to be kiddin' me!(uhm)

If you fall within the range - go get it done [.] If you are not covered - do it yourself - just for the peace of mind!

I spoke too dam soon. Thursday afternoon... just filled up with gas next to a new white ms3. We left together. He was obliged to show me the ms3's power, and I was happy to demonstrate my car's "handling abilities" around a 90* right behind him. Well that's when it happened. Rolled up to the light and talked with him for a minute. Light goes green, and I hadn't noticed the car had stalled. Start her back up, and then I heard it. Limped her into a parking lot and onto a flat bed. Just pulled the IM off last night and my suspicions were confirmed. Failure of both screws on #4. One screw was whole, but completely flattened... Found that one inside the head (not sure what that area is called). I'm not sure where the rest of the other screw is, but I have two thin pieces of metal I pulled out of the combustion chamber itself. Searched for shards in the other 3 cylinders, but nothing. I'll try to post pics tonight. The flapper was whole, and still in the "dynamic chamber" or w/e the hell that's called.

So, what to do now? Stealership service departments are closed today. Going to try ace hardware today for new screws. What should I do?
