protege5 mpg ??

My 2002 protege5 I never break 25mpg I'm usually around 20 that's with aggressive driving(usually late for places I need to be) but I have done full tune ups when required and in the winter I can drop down to low teens

Custom cold air intake
Straight pipe exhaust with cat delete

And for his first post he complains about bad mpgs while aggressive driving? I can go from 23 mpg to 8-10ish if I run my 323 hard for a tank

eh I figure 25 in city giver take, highway 25-35mph depending on speed. I live in a very flat area so its almost all lateral motion and gliding sweeping highways. however if you ever get caught in traffic, different story.

I get about 26 highway, i try and stay away from city traffic. i have a auto with 172,000 miles a cheap ass CAI and a cheap ass Header/ cat delete. it is really hot where i live, so my engine often runs a bit hot. once i thermal wrap s*** and drop it i hope to get about 30 mpg one day

checking your tire pressure with a accurate gauge is important, not all gauges are the same, some are extremely inaccurate

i average 27 ish right now as you can see in my sig below, best was 31.9 average on a 90/10 highway drive 25 was lowest with a ton of traffic, but i have only had it for a month and a half. 5speed new plugs and wires timing belt done at 120k and new k and n air filter. sits at 143k miles now

I just filled mine up from a 2 hour drive from my college to my girlfriend's and I did 33 mpg with my 03 manual, which is outstanding considering my previous car was a Ford Escape that could barely manage 20! So I'm a happy boy!

Bump (didn't want to start a new thread for it)

I'm still only getting about 23-24 MPG in my P5. I've had it for about 2 months and I've replaced the air filter with a K&N drop in, replaced the coil packs, plugs, and wires, and It runs great. I rarely rev over 4k RPM (it's a manual) It had fresh oil when i bought it (receipts to prove it,) i'm just pretty bummed on the mileage. I only fill up with Shell gas. Anything else i should check that might be hindering me? I saw earlier in the thread to check out the egr valve, what should i be looking for? Build up? gunk? Maybe give the MAF a good cleaning?

Try rarely revving over 3K. I typically shift from 1>2>3>5. I've heard that helps. Also, do you regularly check your tire pressure? I tend to keep mine above the Mazda specs of 32psi. I keep mine at 36. And I try to cruise to stoplights in gear as far as I can and then shift into neutral.

I get about 320-330 miles per 11.5~12 gallons (gas light to full, every time). Which is about 26~27 and that's with 5~10 miles commutes at 60-70mph. Stock. Manual.

Have you tried getting an alignment? After I got one done, I went from 300miles per tank to about 320-330 which is 1-2mpg difference.

My current tank seems to be doing even worse. I typically get about 200 miles before the gauge reads a half tank, right now it's almost there and i'm at about 160. I guess i could sea-foam my engine, but aren't you supposed to do that right before an oil change? I've only got about 1000 miles on this oil.

Yeah, I get that sometimes (160 @ mid tank), but still get 300 miles out of that tank.

I get 29 - 30 MPG highway with my manual, which comes out to about 360 per tank before I get nervous and fill it up.

The funny thing is, it doesn't matter how fast or slow I go, 65 or 80 MPH it's about the same. I regularly cruise at 80 - 85 on I5 keeping up with traffic, sometimes 90, and I still get 29 MPG.

I could probably get a little more if I removed the roof rack bars.

But car is 10 years old and being replaced by a 3 next year probably so not going to bother.

Engine has around 165k miles, car approaching 200k. (the engine was replaced for free under warranty by Mazda after the butterfly valve screw defect destroyed the original, no problems at all with second engine from install to now)

on the 3 with Skyactiv engine, you actually get better milage with the automatic. It's a strange world..
