Protege5: Harder, not Smarter!

For what it's worth, I think the 1.8 coils were an improvement for me. I would read the thread. They're not that much more expensive, and they look much better in the bay.

Just doing a quick comparison on rockauto, it would cost you twice as much to go with the 1.8L ignition coils (if you ignore the POS beck/arnley part). For less than $100 you can get an OEM setup (get the "standard motor products" coils and wires), you can't beat that...

I can beat oem setup, I did.......but it was way back when some place had the 1.8s at the real cheapo price before raising them too high. Bought 2 sets, still have a brand new set. No, not the beck ones either.

used to be cheaper to switch to the 1.8l coils and wires. The 1.8l can be made to fit the 2.0l valve cover but fit the 626 cover better so you'll have to change those and the gasket as well.

Ummm, the coil bracket mounts to the head. Are you talking about trimming the plug boots around the 2.0 coil mounting posts vs. using the 626 vc where you wouldn't need to trim them? I've never seen 1.8 coils mounted to 2.0 valve cover.

yes i meant the wires not the coils... But add the extra cost of the coil bracket as well into the conversion.

The coil bracket comes with in all the ones listed on Rockauto. If you look around a bit, you can normally find them a little cheaper than the Rockauto price. I'm just saying they were an improvement for me, and I got them at a reasonable price. It was worth it to me to get rid of the look of the stock coils, and I think they are a better setup.

Guess I've been lucky... only replaced 2 2.0l coilpacks in 10yrs, 5 being well over 300whp without the ill side affects of the Mazdatune??

Yea damn, looks like it used to be worth it. Thanks for the info mates!

FYI the P5 fog light deletes are solid not mesh like the msp ones.

Hmmm, Might have to get my drill out

Got the codes, hooked up my timing lights, all that good stuff. Jurys still out for now. Only misses when it gets revved higher, But anyways.....

Vortex Generators, turbonators, whatever your name of choice. Spent a few good hours making up these beauty's.

Primer them up and paint em red tomorrow. But I will not be installing until I get a new baseline mpg figure from my super accurate Scangauge which is incoming in the mail.

With it I can finally do some pretty decent aero testing Yay!

Cheers!

Fog light covers installed! Like them so much I'm not gonna drill em out for air ducts. :D

Put in 2 new coil packs, drove it around for a little, seemed alright. Well see if that was it :)

You know if you have an Android phone, you could have had a "Scangauge" for 5 bucks (plus 30 for a bluetooth OBD scanner)? ;)

Look up Torque on the market.

My roof filler clips arrived and I clipped it all up. Looking good, drove around with just big ugly holes there for a good month.

Also, driven the car over 100 miles since changing both of the coilpacks. Great throttle response and all the misfiring is gone. :D

Really liking the fillers + fog deletes. Been spending the last week trying to decide what wheel set to look into.
Purely for weight reduction ofc, but I figure if I'm spending so much on a new set and another set of tires I might as well make it something I also like the look of.

Emailed at least a dozen wheel selling sites looking for gold colored Rota Slipstreams in 16x7. Does not look like anyone is even remotely helpful, half the places did not even respond, and the half that did were super abrupt and frankly very rude. I don't see how they get any customers that way. I may try sourcing some and getting someone to paint them for me? I just don't like paying for something that I shouldn't have too. *grumpy mode activated!*

With that in mind, I'm trying to find a different brand of lightweight wheels. Lexan rear window project in the near future.
Cheers!

Yeah, just paint them if you can't find them advertised anywhere. I figure dealers don't get too much of a break on a wheelset so cheap. may have something to do with the customer service since you aren't spending $3g's on a baller set of chrome DuBz, y0! lol. :)

I wonder about the back glass. In my wagon, I had shattered a long piece of rear side glass (volvo 850 wagon). Because of the size of the glass, I thought it would be kinda heavy, and thought about replacing it with polycarbonate or something. But when my buddy and I pulled replacement glass at the junkyard, we were shocked to see how light it was - only a couple pounds. I immediately realized it wasn't going to be worth the effort to switch to poly/plexi/lexan. I'd save more weight by vacuuming the interior. lol.

I parked next to a black MP5 last week - I noticed it didn't have rails or crossbars. I got out of my car and looked down on the roof, and saw the 4 little plastic fillers...I was tempted for a second to pop them off. haha! ;) Nah, I don't think the crossbars are really that much of a detriment to the airflow. I've got a sunroof baffle up there too, which seems like it may act as a fairing to a certain extent. Plus, I'm paranoid that right after I remove the rails and crossbars, I'll need to use the roof rack for something. It's typical of my luck!

On a side note...I got 31.98 mpg average for this last tank of gas! Still NO aero mods at all (car is 100% stock save for a cone filter). Car also had a minimum of 100 lbs of cargo at all times. I think I can hit 35mpg average with the stock gearing and no weight redux. My daily drive is about 17 miles each way of mostly highway (maybe a dozen stoplights max), and then a 60-mile each way, all freeway commute a couple times a week. My speed is typically CC set for ~65, with occasional coasting on downhills and speeding up to go around idiots who still can't grasp the concepts of merging or lane changing...

Not too bad. When I was doing all of my travelling with my P5, I regularly hit 34-35 mpg with the A/C on and 130k miles, so yeah... it is possible.

Turn the votex generators around! They face the wrong way (look at a Lancer Evolution IX).

Hmmm interesting about the back glass. I even pulled off my gas shocks for about a week, but then I managed to whack my head when trying to hold it up and put them back on. That thing hurts! lol
I'm probably toying with the idea of a fiberglass hatch more than just switching it to lexan itself. Looks like quite a lot of metal back there.

Actually the point of "these" generators I made is to "collect" the air, and then release it in a straight stream to bypass the low pressure area directly behind the car. Or at least that's the theory. :)
The design comes from the generators used to "trip" the air over the gap between semi trucks and their trailers.

Goodies in the mail today. (whistle)

Scangauge is a pretty neat toy. This is the second version of it, which is able to show me a host of features.

Fuel consumption rate, miles to empty, avg gallons per hour/minute etc, RPM, throttle position, ignition timing, intake air temps, coolant temps, manifold pressure, battery voltage, 0-60 times, 60-0 times, 1/4th times, reads CEL computer codes, performs a computer emissions check to see whether your vehicle will pass or not....

you get the idea, basically anything your car has a sensor for, you can see whats happening, very cool. (thumb)

Took er' down to the local car show for kicks and giggles. Had some fun chatting with the people that were amazed to see a mazda amid the 80% honda/subaru's (whistle)

Time for some more airflow...

Designed up the adapter in AutoCAD tonight, tricky part is getting the sensors hooked into the mustang one. I'll figure it out...

Intake manifold is getting the butterflys removed and widened and polished for better flow.
