Protege Garage Midpipe Install troubles

Just installed OBX header and Protege Garage Midpipe (From Ken) I'm having a problem with the flanges between the header and the midpipe. I installed the old donut gasket on the header and then placed the flared part of the midpipe to it but the flange on the midpipe doesn't reach the flange on the header, which causes a nice exhaust leak. Should I have to reuse the old springs and hardware?

Yes you need to reuse the old springs

Where do the springs go? Between the flanges or on one side? Do you have any pictures?

Springs need to go between the flanges

*n/m....*

that's not how it is stock. springs between the flanges would make a permanent exhaust leak.

If the Protegegarage midpipe has a flex section in it like the MAM one did, you don't need those (likely rusting anyway) old spring bolts.

It has a flex section, so I will just use loctite to keep the bolts from coming loose. Found second leak though, where midpipe meets the tail section, what gasket is required to go there, the vibrant one seems to leak.

thanks for the help

I had problems with the midpipe meeting the s-pipe/resonator also. In the end I had to use two gaskets with Permatex Copper Gasket former and stuck it together and put a bunch of the former around the flanges and bolted it down like hell..

Worked pretty good!

just wondering how much did the mid pipe help i have been wanting to just put a strait pipe in there with no cat as i dont have aircare testing until 2009

Well you did take it apart didnt you? Anyways, the bolts go through from back to front, then the springs on the front of the bolt and then the nuts. Air gun really helps with these:)

I have been wondering the same, I have an OBX header and really dont wanna spend more than I did on my header for just a straight piece of pipe if its not worth it.

PS. Thanks for posting in the right sub-forum:) Im about tired moving threads lol.

yeah i tried to install my catless midpipe today but i couldn't get the nuts and bolts off the old midpipe to put on the new one, so i have to go buy some more. Looks like i might need some gaskets too.

technically you can use whatever hardware you choose, because the bolts itself are welded to the stock midpipe anyway. make sure its grade 8 or higher. and make sure you buy a bunch of washers as well.
