Protege 5 DEAD

Friends, Protege 5
So my buddy's Protege 5 finally bit the dirt. The previous owner put a turbo on it, lowered it, haltech computer, the full 9 yards. Well just this week we noticed the turbo was smoking a little in the exhaust so we took apart the exhaust and found that when my friend bottomed out it split the exhaust pipe. I welded all that up and it was running fine last night, we checked the oil and it was still a good color. Well this morning he was driving and the turbo's bearing was destroyed and there was water in his oil. So heres the deal we need to swap an engine in the next week or so. What all will fit, and what engine would be best to put in it if he wants to make some power out of it later.
Any help would be greatly appreciated
Thanks in advance
MIKE

Quick fix, another FS-DE. More power, FS-ZE (J-spec) to keep the turbo, or else go for a KL swap.

Kl swap is pretty easy from what I've read search the forum a lot of people have done it.

Azuelke-klze swap would be pointless if he's turbo. Its for more of an na build and he would have to get different pistons anyway

If he's got that much work done to it pull the motor and rebuild. You would have to anyway if you wana keep the forged internals. Really it sounds like the exhaust crack the head or messed up the head gasket. I would get a junkyard head have it rebuilt new gaskets new manifold and call it a day

But he's prob gona want to stay turbo... would there be enough room if he put in a kl? Even in an mx6 it looks like its a pretty tight fit and I doubt you could push an na kl to 300 hp so I'm gona stick with the rebuild vote

with FS-ZE good luck with boosting with that compression ratio, youd have to stay small, stick with FS-DE

well we just had a buddy check out the motor today and it looks like it is completely shot. He said that one of the pistons is demolished and the valves on that cylinder are gone also. So looks like a motor swap is going to be the way to go. So what are a good list of cars for the V6. I checked on wikipedia and it gave me a decent list. This is what i have for V6
KL-DE
1993-1997 Mazda MX-6 GT (E and J spec)
1993-1997 Mazda MX-6 LS (A spec)
1993-1997 Ford Probe GT
1992-1995 Ford Telstar TX5 Ghia, TX5 Ghia 4ws
1993-1997 Mazda 626 ES, LX (after 1994)
1995-2002 Mazda Millenia L
KL-ZE
1997 Mazda Capella Wagon
1993+ Mazda MX-6 Jspec
1993+ Mazda MS-8 (Japan)
1993+ Mazda Eunos 600/800 (Japan)
KL-G4
1998-2002 Mazda 626 ES, LX
And for the four cylinder motor i have these cars
19932002 Mazda 626
19931997 Mazda MX-6
19992001 Mazda MPV (Japan)
19992003 Mazda Capella
20012003 Mazda Protg
19931997 Ford Probe

Wow someone did reasearch? I would say ebay one btw klze has about 200 hp klde has 170 you won't have to worry about ecu since he has the haltech already. I would look more internaly and see if there is damage further down than the piston sounds like it dropped a valve so somebody was being hard on it while it was messing up if there's no damage other than the piston it is still possible to buy a new piston and a head rebuild it and keep it as is. That is unless he wants to swap a 6cyl does sound way better than a 4cyl

well we stripped the motor down today. It ended up that a valve dropped down into one of the pistons, demolished the piston, broke through the bore into the coolant cavity, and the turbo was demolished by having metal fragments flying into the turbines and jamming the bearing. So it has to be a motor swap. What car would be the best to find a V6 motor in.

There are a metric button ton of different KL motors so make sure you research very well. There are some that are OBD1 and OBD2 as well. There are a few cats who turbo'ed their KL powered Protege's so it has been done and is possible. thepope540 has a turbo'ed KL MSP. Justin has tons of info on his KLZE/Protege swap and is super helpful. Bullshark524 is working on his KLZE swap too. And this d-bag is working on a swap as well. I learned a lot about the KLDE and KLZE over at ProbeTalk.com.

Kl swap is pretty easy from what I've read search the forum a lot of people have done it.

Easy in that it will sit on stockish motor mounts, but there is still a lot of electrical, plumbing, and minor fab stuff that needs to be done. If you decide to turbo the KL you're opening a whole new can of worms. If the car is his driver it'll be much faster to just drop in another FS.

Just because I wana see it done if he's got the money to do it do a 4g63 swap you'd get way better gains. If the one dude could fit a honda motor (1.8) than another 2.0 should fit and you don't have to worry so much with wiring either :) I throw this up for everyone doing a swap cause I really wana see it done I would if I had the money.
