Protege 1997 radio removal

Hi, I'm looking for information on how to remove my stock radio from my Protege. I've found alot of info on the 3rd generation of Mazda with the little cover and the Ford keys but not on the 2nd generation. I'm starting from the beginning because I have no info at all on how to remove it so everything will be appreciated!

Thx Matt

You can do with two screw drivers, or a hangar cut into two pieces and shaped into a U. You have to remove two pieces of plastic on each side of the radio, and then you should be able to see the two clips, one on each side, that you can depress with either the screw drivers, or the custom U hooks that you just fabricated.

Any mazda radio of that year can be removed with a set of ford radio removal keys. You should have 4 small holes on the radios face, 2 on each side. Simply put the keys in the holes, 1 per side, push outward and pull out the radio.
You should be able to find them at stores like auto palace or even walmart on occasion.

You can bend coat hangers to accomplish the same thing, they just won't snap in and you'll have to pull at the radio by the tape deck. Screw drivers won't wotk as they would have to be tiny.

Ok now I've mounted my new radio and I got another question. It's a Alpine CDA-9821 and I don't really know how to fix it in my dash. Anyone know?

On your car, how big is tha factory radios opening?
If you can get me some pics I could help you out alot faster.

If the factory radio was only a single din unit (basicly the same size as the alpine, then you only need to use the alpines radio cage to support it. Just put in the cage and bend the tabs to keep it securely in the dash.

If you factory radio is alot taller so that its a doble din unit then you need a dash kit.

Ok, the factory radio is the same size as the Alpine. If I put the Alpine cage on the radio with tabs bended, how it will work if I want to remove the radio after? I didn't see hole to declips or something.

to remove the alpine cage you will have to use a small flathead, or even a key to bend them back up....to get the unit out of the cage you should have got the keys to unlock the receiver from the cage with it ....the keys will slide in between the side of the alpine unit and the cage, youll first have to remove the ring from around the cd player

i know this thread is old but i am trying to remove my radio from my 95 protege and i seem to be having issues. Is there directions on the internet I can follow as I can not find these holes you speak about on the radio...

95 is going to be different i believe. You prob have to pull the trim off to get to the screws holding the head unit to the dash.
