Project Pay2Play: My Eunos Cosmo has arrived!

I've got a question though, why make such a beautiful car, with only an automatic? I mean, it's sweet as hell, but for a more performance oriented sort of car, I'm surprised.

cars with any amount of power the autos are faster then the manuals. Same questiosn could be asked of the svt lighting here in the states...

however i wished they made a 3 rotor car here in the states such as the eunos cosmo

They are faster, but when was the last time you slowed your automatic car down into a turn by downshifting? It permits a great deal more control over the car if you have the standard. Not hating because it's an auto, just curious as to the logic behind it.

ot, I always thought the lightening could use a 5-speed, same goes for buick GNX

In my gf 6i I do it all the time. I have a love hate for that tiptronic tranny.

I dont know if the cosmo has tiptronic tranny or not. maybe Antone can chip in on this.

From the looks of this picture, it's just a regular ole' auto.

After reading through the thread, I guess it is less of a sports car than a luxo-sport-sedan. I still like it lol.

That doesn't mean squat... i mean take a look at my p5 and its a reg auto but that doesn't mean its not offered in a tiptronic auto. I did go back and look at the pictures like you did to. lol I'm with you it's still a sweet ass ride.

'tiptronic' is still a slushbox. The new gen of DSG and DSG-Type gearboxes are actually manual gearboxes that are electroncally actuated, a la Formula 1 ;). Just thought I'd clarify. I've driven a few tiptronic cars before, and there's really not much point other than pretending you're shifting.... sure, you tell it where to shift, but it still has a torque converters and acts as an automatic.

Uh oh, off topic! (outie)

I agree however I dont know if the eunso was ever offered in the tiptronic or not. I'm with you on its crap compared to a real standard card but you can still "some what" control the power.

Im thinking because it was meant to be more of a luxury car than anything else.

Another good question...It's a basic auto tranny but with some bonus features...

Here is a more detailed description from dmrh.com.au:

The triple mode automatic transmission is superbly matched to its luxury coupe image. The press of a button gives a choice between “normal” & “power” mode, the latter increases responsiveness to the accelerator position as well as holding the gear longer before the next up-change. The “hold” mode gives manual control. A great feature for demanding driving & operating as a normal manual gearbox without a clutch. Naturally the best performance figures are extracted from the Cosmo in this mode. The ratios are perfectly matched to the rotary engine ensuring each change up places the RPM in the "meat" of the torque curve. With a super smooth engine, the gearbox doesn't need to work hard to be a smooth power coupler at all easily outshing many auto boxes to this day.

* I believe this description was written during the late 90's or early 2000...

* Keep in mind this tranny was used in the EC from 1990...18 years ago! I'm not sure if there were any updates later on...Overall, there were few changes throughout the EC run from 1990 to 1995.

Thanks!

I hear ya about needing a stand...I've been wanting to get one recently...I'll be looking to get a "proper" stand when I get my hands of a vidcam and SLR...but for now...I'm happy with my pocket cam. :D

I know I am behind, but WOW.

That car is awsome. Is there anyone who doesn't know what this is? The 20b is capable of some wicked HP#'s. I have seen 800 without battin an eye. The "Eunos" motor is a bad mutha. But the 26b... WHEW!

Thanks for the props!

Fujita engineering is one of the best rotary tuners in all of Japan (imo) and I couldn't pass up this chance to checkout the shop which I've been meaning to do...:D

* Pulled this pic off the Fujita website... If you look closely...you can see a yellow Cosmo...Funky! Unlike this pic...While I was there, the place was overloaded with FDs of every color, style and condition imaginable with a few 8s & FCs here and there and a white Cosmo which looked like it hadn't been driven for years :(

Unfortunately...I DIDN'T HAVE MY digicam! I could have shot a lot of juicy stuff but I guess I'll be sure not to forget next time I drop by...hopefully for some goodies to be installed!

However, I did have a chance to chat with the staff dude I met back at the rotary meet in Kobe about the "way of the upgrade" for the Eunos Cosmo.

My next major upgrade will be an in-dash 2din navi unit and around the same time I would like to upgrade the Cosmo's telemetry setup...At first, I had thought about going with digital telemetry solutions from Blitz or HKS that display vital info via a navi screen but these units are designed for late model plug&play systems which means they aren't designed to connect with the EC's older setup. :(

That said...After discussing possibilities with the friendly staff dude at FEED (Fujita engineering)...I realized that the best way for most to view vital real-time info is to go with "traditional" gauges...The only problem is...I want to keep my Cosmo's interior/dash as original and clean as possible while still having the ability to plant gauges etc in effective locations...Hmmm...

Here is a quick pic of the EC interior...Not mine ;)

It should be an interesting challenge to find the best layout (thumb)

I got the Defi system link gauges for my turbo set up, and I love 'em! They're very sophisticated and beautiful, and the control box gives you good lighting and alarm customization options. Pricey, but worth it.

Atonie,
We need to see picture of you standing next to your whip or something to that effect!

Haha...One of these days...;)

Cool...Glad to know you dig the setup...I've always heard nothing but good things about Defi...I really dig the "opening & closing ceremony" feature of their gauges....Just like the Cosmo dash...when the power is off...it's dark as night (2thumbs)

I think I've got an idea on how to mount them but it's going to require creating a custom pod around the steering column...replacing the stock cover...I would like to fit 3 gauges on there if possible in a "V" configuration like so...

oil pressure.......oil temp (or water temp)
...............boost

Although it might not be possible to fit 3 gauges comfortable on there..?

my only complaint with the defi gauges is that they have that starting sequence and so they aren't online immediately so I can get some readings during my cold start problems, but that's it.
