Problem with my p5

My car is 2002 p5 auto and ive only had it for a alil more then a month. My friend was in it the other day when he started it up(cold) and he said it sounded like there wasnt enough oil going to the head at first then when it warms up it stops. Im new to the mazda world just wondering if anybody would know what might be the problem. The car has 56,000 on the clock, and it makes like a little clicking noise but really cant determine how to describe it but this only happens when its cold and u start it up. I wanted to take it to the dealer but i wanted to know what to tell them to look for. I also wanted them to check the tranny its only done it to me once when the car was in drive i stepped on the gas and the car reved up but didnt go anywhere and then it shifted back into gear i was wondering or i figured if the auto trannys around this mileage start acting up thx for ur guys input on this.

i had a problem with that a while back. once my car hit like 3rd, it wouldnt catch right. 4th was like putting the car in neutral. i took my car to the dealer to fix the tranny so you shouldnt definately get that fixed, too. as far as the clicking noise.. does it click and not start up when you're turning the key?

srry its hard for me to describe what he mentioned he said that he was listening to the motor and said that the head wasnt getting enough oil at the time and that he was afraid to drive it because he didnt know what was causing it. And he hit the gas and it sounded like it wanted to stall but im goin2 try to get a hold of him because hes out of town right now and get a better explanation

the same happened when i was driving my Protege, which was an auto, the engines revs like if the car was in neutral(rant)

The vtcs makes a ton of noise, and the loose intake scews on the vtcs and vics makes that noise. Could also be a rod bearing...that's what mine was.

srry here this might be a better statement he said that the head sounded like it wasnt getting enough oil pressure and that the valves were making a clacking noise but this happens only when u start up the car cold hopefully i didnt buy a lemon.

Insufficient oil to the valvetrain would make a rattling noise similar to the VTCS. Most likely the VTCS caused the noise your friend was concerned with.

Yeah - the infamous "cold engine rattle". It is the VTCS system and is perfectly normal - it disappears when the car reaches working temperature.

If you really want to be sure - pull the vacuum pipe from the VTCS actuator and the noise will be gone! The VTCS is there to increase combustion efficiency on a cold engne and is purely to lower emissions (from what I can gather)

i appreciate ur guys posts im goin2 take it to the dealership on monday before the warranty runs out and let them look at it. Now i have a good basis to go by.

Theres a tsb for a cold start rattle caused by the vtcs....

Does the TSB have you change anything or just tell the customer "yeah, that's normal". I wish I would have gotten some TSBs checked out while my car was still under warranty. Damn that flickering AC light.

Off the top of my head you add a delay valve and a pcm reflash.

rats. Oh well, as long as it's not a problem. I don't trust the dealership up here in Rochester (John Holtz Porsche Audi Mazda) or the one back home (Modern Motors Mazda Dodge).. no real reason they just don't seem trustworthy. Plus, Modern Motors dicked me around when my car had all kinds of bubbling paint from rusting out.

Good luck with your Protege5 MiniMeMagnum, you'll love it :D

Jeez, I'm feeling dumb tonight

On the "EGR Cleaned" thread, I asked what an EGR is. Now I'm asking the same question about a VTCS. I've had the cold-engine rattle/knock since I bought the car (dealer kept pooh-poohing me), so I'm curious to know more. It goes away when the engine warms up, but since it's obvious there's not enough oil, I take it easy until it's warm. Hmmm...I do the same thing with my wife! Oh man, I'm so going to Hell.

EBJ2112,
There are two things in the intake manifold on your car (the thing that runs air from the throttle body to the engine). One is VICS and the other is VTCS. VICS is good and opens up a shorter path for air in the upper rpm range. This allows good power throughout the rpm range. VTCS on the other hand sucks!!! It is in the air path in the intake manifold. What is does when the car is cold is cause the in coming air to tumble. This make more heat in the engine and gets the first cat ready sooner (less emissions). After your engine warms up, the values go completely open but still impede air flow. There are write-ups on how to remove this. Hopefully this helps.
