Prince Valorum's 95 626 Build Thread

The thing is though, with all your toys how do you decide which to work/spend money on?

My thinking is, fix the few things that the truck needs first (speedo cable, ebrake (not sure if just loose, or needs replaced), recharge a/c possibly, and fix the rust), and then buy the supporting mods for the ZE swap first, especially the ones that I can install now (poly mounts, short shifter, end links, etc) without the ZE so I can enjoy them in the mean time. I'm planning on using the money from the Miata to get a welder so that I can buy some boat trailers or other cheap trailers and build utility trailers out of them to sell for profit. It'll be a few small projects, and it'll give me something to do, and let me practice my welding skillz.

After the rust, undercoating, and rear bumper are fixed on the truck (with as little invested as possible), it's full concentration on the ZE, which is planned to go down next summer. I've still got tons of research left to do, but we know that's a lot of the fun. After the ZE, I don't really plan to mod the truck too much unless stuff breaks. I'm not sure what's been replaced when, so it'll be pretty seat of the pants. If it breaks, and it can be upgraded, I really don't want to keep it oem. I'm not sure how long the 3vz will hold out, but when it does go, a 1UZ swap is awfully tempting. I'd like to eventually do lockers front and rear, Tundra brakes, some Mickey Thom Baja MTZ 31's when my tires are up (they're almost brand new), and hopefully a winch. We'll see how it goes.

Wooooo, got the 626 back and sold the Miata!!

Took the truck out yesterday, got the title in my name, got it bound for insurance until Monday when the agency opens. Went and put air in the tires, then got gas. After pumping gas, it turned over suuuper slow, to the point where it actually stopped cranking. I let it sit a bit and it did the same thing. I let it sit longer, still in the gas bay (luckily no line behind me), and it barely started. After that, I pulled up to the stop light, and could see my battery gauge dip every time my turn signal blinked.

I busted out the DVM at home and it read 13.7V while running, but only about 11.3V while off, which is low. I took the battery to A zone in the 626 to get it tested, and she said that the battery is good, it was just at 73% charge for some reason.

I called the previous owner about something on the title (non-issue) and he asked how the truck had been treating me. Unfortunately it's sat in my yard for almost the last two months, but I still started it periodically to let it charge the battery up. It's always cranked slow, since I test drove it. I mentioned the issue at the gas station, and he reminded me how he'd told me that it seemed to have a 'dead spot' or something on the starter where it would just not start every once in a while. He said he didn't know why, his dad who was a mechanic suggested it to him he said. He'd owned it for a year and it had happened twice. He said it was never an issue because he knew if he just let it sit for a minute it would start right up.

I'm going to do some digging, something doesn't seem right.

The battery read 12.4V after charging, but still cranked over slower than I thought it should. After a short trip to the Walton Market for a fuse they didn't carry, it did the whole "I don't want to start" routine again. I'm going to try the battery out of my dad's Freestyle. I hope it has enough cranking amps to give a fair comparison. The Yota battery is 1k amps at 32*F and 800 at 0* while the 626's battery is only 760 at 32* and 580 at 0*. Trying another battery that is known to be good seems like the easiest and most cost effective step at this point.

I love having the 626 back. It's so enjoyable to drive after getting used to the Miata, although the shifter leaves a lot to be desired. I think the TWM short shifter has moved up on the importance scale.

Some of you guys really hate miatas. ;)

I actually really like Miatas and want one more than anything else right now. I also really like ragging on Miata owners a lot, though too. Which is why I seem so harsh here and on TMF! Seriously though, I totally joke about it and want one myself someday to possibly turn into time trial or Spec Miata...

Got the 626 through emissions today. That's with a CAI, header, catback, stock cat, and burning oil. Most of the readings were about as high as they could be and still be within the limits. Here's to hoping that next year, the ZE will be in, and I'll have the car registered to another location where I won't need emissions!

Stopped by the Toyota dealership to check on some parts for the truck. I'm used to dealing with the guys at the Mazda parts department, and I have to say, I was impressed today. The one guy knew off the top of his head that the '89 trucks used an electronic speed sensor instead of a speedo cable. It'll be about 80$, and they can order it for me. Try doing that at Ford, lololol. Ford discontinues all parts 3 years after the model finishes that gen... The other thing I checked about was the contacts in the starter. The guy at the counter said that could definitely be what's causing the hard start problem, and that they had a kit to replace them (~30$), printed out the diagram for me, and told me how to do it. I can't ask for much more than that!

Got the new starter contacts ordered. They're supposed to come in tomorrow, or Friday, and the plan is to install them on Saturday. I've been driving the truck a bit the last few days, and damn does it feel manly to be out haulin stuff, lol! I guess I didn't know what I was missing! :p

Now, some people might be disappointed, but I've already procured my first mods for the truck... I told myself it was going to stay stock, but a lot of good that did. The first step is admitting you're an addict, right? (yes)

I dunno if you can read the sticker on the top, it was only 10$! All I need is an antenna. This would make it a easier to hear and communicate on the Team Ohio Fun Runs if it recieved the handheld radio channels.

If you'll notice, it's a sub on top of the sub box, and the new one is still in the box, so yes, I now have two subs! ;)

Evan (Lewis7789) somehow blew his sub while starting his car a while ago. I was there when it happened, and it made no sense. It was fine the run before, he started it again, and pow, it was gone. Phen said it smelled like a capacitor blew, so maybe it's fixable? I'm going to take it to my electronics repair shop and see what they can do for me. I traded my old sub, a 10" Alpine Type-R with a 760 peak watt Pioneer dual channel amp in a huge ported box plus 30$ for these two subs. I had the box and stuff in the 626, but after I installed the suspension it flew around too much in the truck for my tastes, so I took it out. It's also heavy as balls. I wasn't using it, so even though it's worth a lot more, I'd rather have something I'll use rather than something I don't use sitting in my garage.

If I can get the one sub repaired, I'll put it in the truck (more likely to get stolen in there, I'd imagine), and the nice new-in-box one in the 626. I never even use the radio in the 626, but I guess I'll have that option now. I've already got a neat (imo) idea for how to hide/disguise the sub in the truck. I'm not sure how it'll turn out.

Both of these mods cost a total of 40$ (plus my sub that I wasn't using), so I think I'm doing alright so far. Sounds like the words of an addict, huh? (eek2)

I'm also considering getting a short shifter for the truck. It's got some slop, and I've missed the 3-2 downshift several times and went to 4th instead now. I'm not used to driving a truck, so if I can tighten it up and make it more enjoyable to drive, I'm all for that. I just don't want it to become a hassle to drive the truck. Right now, taking it easy on the trans and everything, I end up holding up traffic, and I don't like that. :(

Going to look at a welder today. ;)

Does this mean you will cut out my resonators and weld straight pipe in its place for a case of beer? (now that you are 21 and all...)

^^^ LULZ! That's so mean but so bloody funny. Congrats, buddy!

Nice! Do you know anyone that can weld?

Yeah, I think Josh can.. I'm kind of sorry we showed you how to use the pink font, lol. (fuoops)

Haha, lemme play around a bit and feel confident doing stuff for myself first. But beer sure is temping! I have very high standards for myself, and I wouldn't feel right accepting to do work for others if I wouldn't be happy with the product, you know?

Not too much going on recently. Replaced the starter in the truck, and now it cranks like a mofo. After a few other tweaks, it should be ready for winter duty.

I've been designing a custom trunk system that I think some of you may enjoy. Just need to pick up supplies and get crackin on it.

End links ordered!

Applied for my student discount code from TWM, too, so I'm going to order the short shifter and knob when I get that! Really looking forward to getting the parts on the car before Mid Ohio!
