power drop issues

First issue I have is the other day I totally lost power. I was just tooling along no big deal at about 2400 RPM in like 4th. I rolled on the power to get around a slow moving truck and it seemed like I had a boat anchor on the back bumper no power at all for about 2 seconds into it then BAM total loss of power for a split second. No CEL came on or nothing but since then car seems very underpowered. Cant even get rubber out of a 2nd gear roll on like I used to get all the time. I brought it to the deal they say nothing is wrong. But now when I get on it the engine seems to be hunting for power or the ignition curve or something. Its got this surging action for a while then it evens out but nothing as far as power as it used to have. Any Ideas?? I got 35k miles and its been flawless till now.

I'm guessing ms3 rather than reg 3.... perhaps a bad batch of fuel? Maybe try resetting the ecu, leave battery unhooked for a few min and see what happens. Also keep in mind that with as rich as the car is, and with FI in general, it tends to foul spark plugs rather quickly so that might be a good place to start

any mods? This info may help with a diagnosis

Yeah, start simple. Reset ECU and check plugs. Another thing to check for are any vacuum hoses that may be disconnected or leaking. Last, has the dealer done all the ECU flashes for recalls?

They did flash the ECU. I was thinking plugs myself. No mods to date going to get them going soon however. Unless you consider 16 inch snow tires a mod and yes 16" steel rims do fit with about a 3/16th inch gab around the front calipers :P anyway I am going to pick up a set of plugs and see if that is it and remove the battery cable to see whats up with that. I have seen bad plugs right out of the box before so its a good possibility.

Sounds to me like you popped a boost tube off somewhere. Search all the pipes connected to the intercooler and all the hoses on the intake manifold. something came off.

GREAAT its like -2 out today here. I may have to wait till I can get in a heated garage to do this... Either that or freeze my hands like I did this morning changing out my wipers. you dont think the cold has anything to do with it do ya? I mean its been HELL ARSE COLD here the last week or so. Very cold dense air but these cars run rich so it should be perfect.

I've had a similar situation twice in the past 6 months (loss of power, no 2nd gear rubber, delayed throttle response). I'm almost completely convinced now that its due to gas. Both times the gas was bought at a Holiday station near my house, at pumps labeled as 93 oct.

Has anyone intentially put 87 oct in an MS3? I'm wondering if 87 oct would cause that power loss. If so, how likely is it for a station to advertise 93 oct and pump 87?

Manual recommends replacing the plugs at 48,000 kilometeres. Which you have passes a little over 5,000miles. So yes, I would replace the plugs asap. Your dealer should have told you that.
