..the old BG chassis

Here's a few pics of my old '96 Escort LX. She was a good car until it dropped a valve seat at 72k miles and destroyed the engine. Dropped in a new engine and sold it. :D

The quality of the pics really suck, but here they are...

wow. with the exception of a few cars...most of the 'previous' cars here would have been eligible for a RiceCop ticket...

that huge tach on the civic was too fast, too furious.

Wow, I hope those with the riced out cars grew out of that stage of their lives. I wish I had pics of my older projects, but no digicam back when I had those rides. Here's my Audi A4 about week before I taded it in for the P5.

You guy's like to call rice a lot around here!
What exactly is rice to you?
Anything that doesn't fit in with your own style?
If the Mazda's had as much aftermarket support as lets say a honda ,then there would be a lot of different opinions on this board.Period.
Matt :(

ForceFed,

I've grown up modding cars. I remember growing up in the Philippines in the 70's and 80's having my dad fix up his Toyotas, Mitsubishis, Nissans etc with genuine parts. And remember, we got JDM cars there that were not shipped to the US. I remember boxes of HKS, TRD, Mikuni, Panasport, Hasemi, SSR sitting in our garage. Then when I would visit my relatives in the US, I wouldn't see imports as nice as we had in Asia. When my family finally moved to the US in 1985, this was around the time my older cousins who had been living here started fixing up their AE86's, 1st Gen RX-7's etc. And they were using the same quality products. And their cars looked mean and they were fast. Nothing flashy, and every part had a purpose, even down to the light weight Hasemi and SSR wheels and even the body kits really created more down force. Even though out high school and college, my friends and I went for the simple and clean style.
Now when I see cars now adays with outrageous body kits that don't do anything for aerodynamics, with cut stock springs, rolling on steelies, and APC tailights, it makes me sick. Everyone thinks that all you need to do is watch Fags and Furious and your an expert on fixing up a car.

Yes EXA4DRIVER!I agree with you to a certain extent.
Did you even look at the pics of my previous car?
Would you call it "RICE"?
It was a purpose built car and everthing on it had a function beleive it or not.
The car was built to "SHOW" and win at shows!
WIN is exactly what it did everywhere.
Of all the shows I ever entered,it failed to place at only one show.
The first one I ever displayed it at!
Everyone felt that I was robbed at that show as a stock "NEW" Si cicvic beat me with almost wheels alone. No one got that??????
Neither did I.
This car placed at shows that were local events and at national events.I did take first in my class at NOPI in Atlanta.
Now does that make this "RICE"?
I think not.
What I think is that it makes me good at what I do,
Building high quality cars!
Matt;)

'rice' is anything that I believe is an addition to a non-show car that detracts from its present or potential performance and comfort.

I believe that the following are rice on a non-show car:

- large aftermarket tachometers or extraneous gauges (A-pillar gauges especially) - these are even more rice if they don't work and are just present for appearance
- painted interior parts, i.e., painted HVAC, vents, console
- body kits which do not improve performance - this includes large front spoilers/splitters/rear spoilers
- a prominently displayed air freshener (air spencer)
- $20K in appearance mods, but performance mods consisting of new wires and an engine dress-up kit - yes, dub wheels are appearance mods
- aftermarket lamp housings, i.e., altezza lamps, or the addition of a lamp housing from another vehicle
- a combination of springs/shocks/coilovers which drop the car more than 1" - wheel gap is not a performance inhibitor nor does it look bad
- aftermarket exhaust systems whose sole purpose are to be loud and obnoxious
- the addition of any extraneous emblems, i.e., the Mazdaspeed emblem on a non-Mazdaspeed car
- the addition of stickers which present the brand names of parts contained within the car - stickers for parts that are not on the car are especially rice

The above are my Ten Commandments of Rice.

Again, they are MY rules. MY opinions. everyone is entitled to their own opinion just as a person is entitled to rice out his car.

However, don't be pissed off at me if I call your car 'rice' - again, it is just my opinion.

I am a FIRM beleiver in everyone having the right to thier own opinion. This is what makes this world interesting!I do not bash people for their opinion neither.
In my case ,the car WAS built for "SHOW" specifically.
I violate almost every one of your ten commandments.
BUT, is my car rice to you?
Remember it is "SHOW BASED"
Now is it "RICE"?
Matt;)

I wish i could find a pic of my previous car, it actually looked good.
It was a 1996 Regal GS Coupe, Burgandy with matching leather interior and a spoiler. It was sitting right around 220hp.

he said and I quote "I believe that the following are rice on a non-show car:"

if your car is a show car, do whatever you want to it.

:)

it's not rice when it's being displayed at a show...especially if it is being shown to present the crafting skills of the car's owner or to present the products of the sponsor.

but if I see it putzing along on the road - it's rice.

sorry, but that's what I think. if you have a show car, have another car as your daily driver - you don't want your show car to be ruined - you might lose a chance at winning.

the same goes for people who build their cars for the dragstrip. don't keep your drag slicks on your daily driver. swap your wheels/tires out.

Well Matt, you're putting me in a tough spot here.

What I like about the Del Sol:

The Paint Job (Volvo C70 Orange?)
The Sparco Seats
NOS (was it hooked up or just for show?)

What I don't like about the Del Sol: Everything else.

Would I consider it rice? To my standards, yes.

That's really cool that you place first at NOPI, a very big show to say the least. I guess east coast and west coast styles of cars are very different. But I must say there are a lot of clean rides in the east coast. Like I said before, I'm more into the JDM/simple and clean look.

That absurd wing had a function? Did it operate as a ham radio antenna?

Like I said eveything had a purpose. It was a SHOW vehicle and its purpose was to flow well with the rest of the vehicle and it's body mods. And I did drive this car also. Most of the time it sat in the garage waiting on the next show.It was not a trailer queen(I HATE THOSE),It got driven to every show it was at.Even if the show was an 8 hour drive away!

The point is the wing is not functional. It's for looks only. I'm guessing the same thing for the hood scoop, unless it is really ducted into the intake.

Forcefed, I think your car is tight. I have no problem with incredibly modded cars, as long as they're tasteful and well executed (a shoddy paint job or no paint job on the body kit is rice, a wing that doesn't fit the car's styling is rice, cheaply painted interior is rice, stickers for no reason is rice, badges that don't belong is rice).
From your car you can tell that you put a lot of QUALITY and THOUGHT OUT work into it, be it appearance or performance.

Plus, I don't believe having A-pillar pods with guages is rice, especially if you do have a need for it (if you have heavy performance mods done to your car you want to see what's going on. If you overboost and don't know, Kablamo!!).

Anyway, love the license plate!! keepin' it real :D
