Possible 3 purchase...

i'm thinking in the next 5-10 years or so, hyundai's public perception will make a huge turn, as far as cars go i haven't seen anyone suggest the honda fit?

i would steer clear of the toyota... my gf drives a corolla and every time she gets from it into my 3s she hates herself just a little more cause of how "generic" her car is... and honestly she only gets 3-4mpg more then i do and if i didn't drive with a lead foot it it would probably be a toss up... the interior has been in for warranty work 3 times i think due to compartments not staying closed or one time it was so hot outside that all the latches on all the compartments warped and they all fell open when you shut the doors... the interior is pretty cheap and the stereo is nothing to write home about... though she does have the ground clearance of an suv so you have that going for you...

what about the 4cyl 6?? my old roomate bought one and loves it still... may not be 30mpg but should be around 26+ with mostly highway and the 5door 6 is sexay!!!

My mom has an 06 corolla le, she loves it. The corolla is a decent car but very plain. It is still an option but I am sure that as soon as he gets in one he will hate it. When I was looking at cars I was concidering a Matrix, I sat in one and decided that was not the car for me. I didn't even think it was worth a test drive. I like a car with a nice interior, I spend almost 3 hours a day in my car, so I have to be comfy and happy in it. Still I think the 3 and the tc are at the top of his list, but he really needs to get in them, maybe Monday we can do the dealership strip :)

What about:

Chevy Cobalt SS
Nissan Altima 2.5
Honda Accord
Kia?

Just throwing out more possibilities. It looks like you're into imports though.
I think the little 110 hp cars (Fit, Versa, Yaris) are extremely practical. If we all wanted the most bang for our buck, we'd all be buying those instead of Mazda3. =) Unfortunately, we live in the "bigger is better" society. Also, I think the engine would be screaming for long periods, driving at 80mph.

my gf's is an 04 S model and she really did like it until she got in my 3 (she would have prefered the sedan over the hatch that i have but its the same thing inside) and where she has had warranty issues i haven't had any (first model year and everything)

not sure on what you guys need for space in your car or your budget but what about the bigger 4cyl cars accord/camry/mazda6??? what about used? does it have to be new? you could pick up a nice volvo or maybe a prius or civic hybrid that will get you the mpg you are looking for?

I <3 the honda Fit, but my husband is anti-wagon... so it's a no go :(

The Fit is awesome...you can tote llamas and sheep in it (per their ads).

Yeah, most of those little practical cars just don't have the power to deal with the heavy rush hour commute. He wants something with enough power to merge, pass and keep up with the Turnpike traffic. Nick currently has a Cavalier and buying a Cobalt is like buying the same car he already has (and hates). The Altima and Accord are both out of budget by the time they are equiped simular to a mazda3s touring.

a scion xd when it comes out is worth a look at i think. i know no wagons but it's supposed to have a 128hp 1.8L engine and start around $14k which is tough to beat

Except my car *knock on wood* Nick and I have never had any luck with used cars, plus the good interest rates and incentives are always on the new cars.

The used hybrids, unless they have alot of miles are still slightly out of budget, and we have a hard time paying 20k+ for a used car, no matter what it is. I personally like the camry, one of our friends was selling thier 03 with 20k miles and Nick said it was just too big (dunno).

In the 'Nicktionary' the definition of wagon is any car that has 3 or 5 doors

Protege5 -> wagon

yaris hatch -> wagon

CX-7 -> fat wagon

I wouldn't buy a hyundai because koreans make bad cars. ... I am not into american cars because they are unreliable and poorly built...

Wow! o_O That's quite an injudicious thing to say as others have put it. One only needs a quick glance at the quality/ reliability surveys to substantiate the invalidity of that statement.

Anyway... to answer the threadstarter's question, I was considering WRX (hatch), 5 door GTI, A3, and the MS3. I was looking at hatches only. ^_^

As a frugal commuter, Corolla, Fit, Scion xB come to mind. I'd likely to consider the Honda Fit; they're supposed to be very fun to drive. =p

DO NOT get the caliber, horrible car from concept to implementation.

Hmm I think you should drive the hyundai elantra before you mark it off your list. I have read the recent edmunds.com review on it and they seem to love the car and state that it's actually quite athletic in handling and loaded with safety features. Give her a spin, you might be suprised at the improvements hyundais have been making. Actually Kia isn't bad either now that hyundai took it over I bet the spectra is just as reliable as the hyundai elantra but I would take the elantra over it since it's a newer design. Also the mazda 3 has been a winner for a while now too. I say drive them all and give us a synopsis of the pros and cons. good luck

There are rumors of VW equipping their 2008 Jettas with their Turbo Diesel motors again. If they do they will get great gas milage and the fuel is a bit cheaper then regular here.

I am considering the M3GT. It is a bit sportier then the versa and also has HIDs and options I like without having to go for a turbo motor.
