Possible 3 purchase...

I wouldn't buy a hyundai because koreans make bad cars. The fusion might be nice, but I am not into american cars because they are unreliable and poorly built. Its a nice looking car though.

Hyundai made bad cars, but that was almost 1/4 of a century ago. Their cars are now very reliable and well designed.

The Ford Fusion is a rare bright spot in the Ford line up, well designed and reliable.

The 3 is definately a better choice. The toyota yaris wouldnt be able to handle highway driving at 80MPH with its little 1.5L engine. and its a pretty basic car with a lot of stand alone options. Same with the corolla with its 1.8L Biggest thing in my opinion is this. Safety and stopping power. Out of the Yaris, The Corolla and the 3 the 3 is the only one with 4-wheel disc brakes. also with a S-touring youll already have your ABS and airbags. you only need to pay for the moonroof..... which is always packaged with a Bose 6cd sound system.

toyota prius? 60mpg hwy is pretty badass and it starts at 22k....the 3 is good but all honesty he probably wont see 30 mpg in a regular 3 cruising at 80mph...i was actually considering getting a prius because of the gas mileage and you get large tax returns on hybrids.

my gf got a yaris about a month ago. 80 on the highway is no problem (i drove it from boston to upstate ny last weekend), the thing only weighs 2300lbs. it is true about the options, the base price is a very base car, no power anything. the brakes have no problem stopping the car either, it's basically a go kart so anything hydraulic will work :). oh yea, we got 38mpg with mostly highway driving that weekend. mostly cruising on the highway at 75-80. i even got to use cruise control (something my current and last car didn't have) so i felt like i was riding in luxury :)

So anyway... my husbands car has well exceded the 200k mile mark and we are begining to question its reliability. He drives 60+ miles to work (each way) and needs a car thats going to cruise along during rush hour at 80 mph. I am looking for some feedback from owners on how the car handles a highway commute. He is looking at the 4 door s Touring, with the 5 speed auto. The other cars he is looking at are the Hyundai Elantra Limited, Scion TC and Ford Fusion. Both the TC and the elantra have a 4 speed auto, so I am assuming they will be about as responsive at highway speeds as my wimpy protege. The Fusion seems a little pricey in comparison to the 3...

What other cars did 3 owners concider?

His basic essentials are minimum 30 MPG highway, side airbags, abs, and AT

The things he wants (but can skip) are 6CD+mp3 and iPod connections, alloy wheels and Moonroof.

I think the 3 is his best option, but a little feedback from owners would help.

Thanks :)

If he wants to sacrifice the fun aspect of the mazda3 (and the much more beautiful interior) then he should pick up a civic EX. I always said the Mazda3 > Civic in everything.. except gas mileage. Since you want 30+ MPG city, I would say lean towards the civic since you can hit near 40s, and according to edmunds, the mazda3 is lacking in that dept.

However, if he wants good gas mileage, a gorgeous interior and a bit of pep to his drive, I'd get the 3.
