Porsche GT1 to emerge as Veyron-slayer

-AutoBlog

The Bugatti Veyron is the gold standard for supercars. There are but a few cars as fast and none as opulent or expensive as the seven-figure exotic. According to Autocar magazine, Porsche may be getting ready to go head to head with Bugatti using a roadgoing version of the Le Mans racer it is currently developing. Dubbed the GT1, the uber exotic will produce 950 bhp and hit a top speed of 254 mph, a couple clicks over the Veyron's best effort of 252 mph.

The GT1 could be view as a replacement to the recently cancelled Carrera GT, as it will use a modified version of that car's carbon fiber chassis but be skinned with a different body and feature a closed cockpit. The GT1's prodigious amount of power could be produced by either a modified version of the Carrera GT's V10 or a turbocharged version of the Cayenne's V8 with a larger displacement.

PistonHeads reports that Bugatti is already working on a faster Veyron, so Porsche better step on it before Bugatti moves the target.

HAVE THE GERMANS GONE TRULY MAAAD!?!?! I love it...I'm voting for the next Veyron (I can't believe there might be a FASTER Veyron...:wtf:)!

Top speed is nice but something stated about the Veyron that they must prove for if they did would be amazing if anyone else beats it.

It was: "You could give the McLaren F1 and 120 Mph head start and the Veyron will bet it to 200mph" If the Veyron really could go 200mph before the previous champ finishes that last 80mph....OMG!

Yep I read the same thing! BADASS is all I can say.

That was from Jeremy Clarkson when he tested the Veyron.

I couldn't imagine how much more money VW would lose in keeping the Veyron around and keeping the R&D going on it to find more reliable and tractable horsepower out of it.

isnt porsche in the same family as audi & vw? so they are competeing with themselves?
No, Porsche is by themselves. They are one of the only few houses that is Porsche and only Porsche. They did come from VW yes, but they spawned off themselves. Occasionally they do contract work for other makers, but not often.

I wonder if Porsche is doing this b/c of the Le Mans rule changes that are coming in a few years. I think they were trying to make the P1 class into closed top cars and dont the P1 cars use V10's or turboed V8's?

Well, not entirely true. They do own 20% of VW. Also, they share a lot of parts. But yes for all intensive purposes, Porsche is it's own company all by its lonesome and doing just fine.

If you think about it... we're actually very lucky to be living in this age of the supercar. I doubt in another 30-40 years they'll ever be anything like this again. We'll look back on these supercar horsepower wars...

Correction but VW actually came from Porsche. It's an ironic story. Back before WWII, Adolf Hitler contacted Ferry Porsche (the first Porsche) and asked him to create a small, family-oriented car that was very affordable. Porsche made it into a predecessor of the beetle and it was named volkswagen (people car in english) or VW for short.

After watching the Le Mans race and listening to all the commentary, it seems that in 2008 or 2009, all prototypes will be closed coupes (like the Bently Speed 8). Supposedly, the engine choices are up to the manufacturer, so theoretically, they could use a V8, V10, or V12. It's going to be an interesting few years for motorsports.
