i am not sure if it has a torque convertor. the same ones they put in bmw's smg and ferrari's f1 and toyota's new tranny for the spyder.

Well the Audi has the CVT... continously variable transmission... is that an auto? I dont think there is a torque convertor. However the mazda/ford auto is very durable. In talking to lentech they use the exact same transmission on the 385hp focus. The exact same auto that is in the protege. They replace the torque convertor and valvebody but it is very realistic. It neednt be a V8. And anyways no matter what auto vehicle is being raced it will always have an upgraded tranny,... just as an MT that is raced. A stock auto is as reliable as a stock MT.... add power and eventually u will need to upgrade either of them.

note: auto trannies ARE stronger than MT. not in the proteges.. but as far as physics and engineering are concerned.. an AT tranny can be stronger than any MT.

i plan on turbo'ing my car.. so long as i can find a decent price for reinforcing mine. ($1200 is reasonable)

This thread is gettin my hopes back up. I have a shift-tronic/ paddle-shift/ bump-shift, whatever you wanna call it, and recently i've been reading about ppl blowing there AT tranny when they turboed. This was detremental to me because i want to turbo my car. I dont wanna do a tranny swap, thats just to much money. So recently i've been put into a bind thinkin that im gunna have to stay NA just to save the life of my tranny. My question is, does my shift-tronic (what have you) tranny have a torque converter in it so that i can beef it up with the 1200 dollar option? then i can put my foot into the land of tuboed supercars and drop-dead gorgeous women!!! (bow)

green.. you might wanna look into http://www.levelten.com
i will be looking into lentech, as they are about 6 hours away, and canadian (no exchange makes me happy)...
levelten has some good reviews.. they're probably a little overrated, but they're still a credible company.. you could easily get to 10-12psi with a rebuilt tranny from them (maybe need stage 2 rebuild)

Yeah I too felt that there was no hope and I was planning on doing a tranny swap until akellius showed me the way. I will be looking into either http://www.lentechautomatics.com/ or www.levelten.com to beef up my auto tranny so then I can turbo my car (band2) but for now I'am going to stay N/A. But in the future I will join the darkside.

Levelten is located near me in NJ, however from my research they dont offer specific items... ie they have upgrades for most tranny's but they dont have experience with any specific trannies... like lentech... personally i wouldnt bother with levelten.. as has been said they arent as helpful and they might not have the kind of expertise that lentech has either on our cars. Oh and levelten makes u send in your parts wheras lentech u can buy parst and have them installed... pulling a tranny to have it upgraded would really suck and add alot of $$
yeah but for $1200 i think u could protect your tranny over 200whp at least.

yeah.. i want a specific quote from them.
like site says, our tranny is almost identical to the one in the Focus.
i need something that can go over 200whp.. the Terminator Series tranny seems to be good.. 275whp.. that's about the most the engine could deal with without going through forging 'n crap..
ES turbo + Lentech tranny = $5000 in the hole for +60whp off the bat, +150whp by the time i'm done. :)

i didnt read all the replies but just a note for you that most bmws come in standard tranny....one of the few luxury cars that you can get in standard tranny. i guess the people in europe arent as big of pussies as us.

weather any one agrees or not, it IS shame on the auto driver!

mostly becuz most of the auto driver tries to be the "racer" with an auto.

dont b**** at or hate on me, fuk with those who try to be the racers and drive an auto of any kind - go for the source!

leev me alone. im a standard driver who cares not for racing, fuk those who tried to show me as otherwise and tried to "quote" my post as being opposite.

dickbags, get a REAL job- then read the sig and the quote!

that's alright..
opinions are like assholes... everybody's got one.

i commute lots and i'm too tall to have MTx.. so i'm gonna do my best with the ATx and be the only seriously modded ATx in my city :)

damn clast, what is your problem? i may agree about auto trannys sucking, but damn, dude, you are always so angry at the world.

Yes

I have a new used 2002 auto, I'd prefer the auto/manual BUT I have rented the 6 with the a/m and to be honest it was okay. I'd only want it for driving in the hills to be honet. Given the need to juggle a cell phone, a cup of jo and stop and go traffic, auto is so much easier. Sure manual rules for performance....

Great forum and I'm getting the hang...

Stock 2002 P5 auto

planned mods:
CAI, Catbck, headdder
Peerless audio seperates, soundproofing and a 7 year old Soundstream 5 channel!!!!!! (never one problem)

i've modded my car and will be boostin at some point here in the not to distant future, and yes it's an auto and i suck, so there. i don't care. i bought the auto because i thought it was going to be a shared ride with some fam members who don't do sticks. anyway, i fell in love with the car, the ride, how it handled and told the fam members "hands off". now only my wife drives it once in a great while. it's my daily driver and i don't plan on drag racing, just want what mazda should have given us in the first place...more ponies!!(yes) i do agree though that the stick is way more fun!!

mmhmm

need we say more?
boosted autos FTW!

its only a couple hundred bucks to upgrade the tranny to take moderate boost. like... a grand to build it with a new TC. I just wish our trannies were more like the gms or volks where you have controll of every gear. I have the 02 model which didnt have tiptronic and i only have control of two gears really.
I think lentech makes electronics to add that control though. or i guess you could just get the parts for the tiptronic sincethey are the same tranny.

Ill mod it for sure. although i dont know if ill bother with boost untill im 100% on modding my motor, or just getting a kl donor and dropping that. found a ford probe GT for $600 so might be cheaper lol.

whoah... 4 year bump out of nowheres!

anyway, I voted "no" - because if you mod it you might want to keep it... and not trade it for a car with a proper transmission ;)
