Is synthetic really superior?
Mobil, Penzoil and all the rest are sure to have good websites, but if you check out Consumer Reports, a completely impartial testing source, they had some interesting points to make about different oil brands. Basically, they put a lot of motors built and measured to exact specifications into NY taxicabs and let them run for 60,000 miles on different brands of oil.
The surprising results?
They measured NO SIGNIFICANT DIFFERENCE between any brand they tested, including organic and synthetic. They all performed well. The only reason they suggested spending the extra money on synthetic would be if you had a high load motor, such as a work truck or something. Normal cars would be fine on any brand.
Peace of mind doesn't have a price on it, though, so if you feel better with synthetic under the hood... go for it.
