Passing etiquette?

dude, you're in the DC area, home of the left lane campers. He was in the wrong.

passing on the right is illegal...at least in every state I've driven in.

I wait a little bit, give them time to get over since some people are extremely cautious and want 12 car lengths of room before they get over, keeping a safe distance. If they don't get over I flash my high beams a couple of times, if they still don't get over I pass on the right and give them the one finger salute. That's how Floridians do it anyway....normally I'd leave out the one finger salute but people tend to love it down here and hey...who am I to not take part in local traditions.

if I recall (long time ago though, in driving school lol), Maryland is one of the few state in US that actually explicitly states you can pass both from left AND right in the rule books.

as to what I would do if somebody came up on me and flashed to tell me to move over, well it depends on my mood. If i was in a good mood i would move to the right and let him pass, no question asked, but if i was in a bad mood and feel like he's pressing the issue and being a jerk behind me, well then i guess it's brake check time (evil)

I prefer the clap-clap-2-thumbs-up manuever myself. Clap-clap for "Brilliant move!" and 2 thumbs up for "Way to go a-hole".

Flashing is fine for me. I don't get upset at all. If I get side tracked, and get flashed. Its more of and "oops, sorry. I'll get out of the way." Also I hate cell phone talkers... they be doing some stupid things.

I still have yet to install the 55watt drivinglights in my rear window. I gotta find the time to do that. I miss them. I had a set on the roof rack of my Jeep. Someone comes behind you and puts the brights on, I turned on the driving beam lights facing backwards and magically, thier brights were no longer on.

I've actually considered this as of late. The majority of my driving nowadays is done when I drive back home to visit my parents (usually at night), and I've encountered a few assholes who've turned their brights on me. Maybe they feel they don't see how they're holding up traffic going 70 in the fast lane when traffic is moving along at 80+ mph, who knows. (dunno)

I think it is wrong to pass on the right. Not only is it more dangerous, legally (in most states anyway) you are only supposed to pass on the left.

I used to cringe when passing on the right, but honestly its gotten to the point that I don't even want to deal with the morons in the left lane anymore. Last time I was on the highway I tapped my brights and had this guy in a brand new BMW slam his brakes. I don't tailgate because I don't need rock chips all over my hood and bumper.

I didn't know this was the way Floridians did it, I'll have to give it a try. :D

personally i think passing from left or right is ok, it's NOT SIGNALING that you're changing lanes that pisses me off greatly.

Aparently not in FL. Noone here does!! And the one guy that does, signals he's going right and goes left.

I-4 is just plain scary to drive on now! I lived in Orlando for 18 years, driving the last 7 of them in Orlando. After living down in Port Saint Lucie, going home to visit the familly and taking I-4 is flippin scary!! Cars come swerving 3 lanes over from the fast lane to the exit doing about 90!

lol. Oh! And, nice to meet you Taylor's other half. So you're the one that has to put up with him? So, is Pimpin ain't easy no more for him? lol

Actually HE has to put up with ME. LOL! :)

Just for the record, the driver was a young, A.A. male, approximately 23-25 years old. I did get a good look at him when I was behind him and when he was beside me.

If it was an old lady, I would have understood... she just wouldn't notice me or wouldn't care. Come to think of it...Maryland is rife with left lane drivers. Some of the worse and inconsiderate drivers in the country!

I-4 is something else that's for sure. :p I guess I'm lucky to only drive the stretch of road from 408 to citywalk. At night it's not that bad.

The concept of "the fast lane" is dead in this country. No one understands that the furthermost left lane is suppose to be reserved for those wishing to go faster than the traffic. But nowadays, people get so offended at the slightest things.

I don't flash to get people to move over. I just wait until there's room on the right (I have zero problem with passing on the right) and pass them and then try to take their front bumper cover off as I cut back into the left lane which is usually followed by me throwing my right turn signal on as I pull away from them.

Oh...I have no problem passing on the right... I had / have been doing that for years in Maryland, I just don't think it should work that way. I have only starting flashing people (in Maryland) during the last 9 months or so as an effort to get back on the right track. I guess I should have mentioned that most of the people (80%+) move over with no issues. If they got mad, they certainly didn't make it known.
