(shrug) Ok, so if somone, say me, wanted to paint a factory set of aluminum wheels off a Mazda 6, which paint would you recommend and how should I prep the wheels for paint. Going to be painting them black and I don't want to take the tires off to paint them, just FYI. Thanks in advance.

Yep, I have them on mine right now... long story, but sold the original ones for some 18's...traded the 18's for some 17's for my Fiance's Mazda6, going to sell her aftermarket 18's, and put the newly polished 17's on hers, and for the time being we put the Mazda 6 16's on mine with new tires.

BUMP FOR PAINTING TIPS.

get a good wheel cleaner. i used some meguires stuff and palmolive. make sure the wheel is squeaky clean. if you have any scratched, get some 400-600 grit to removed em. if you really want them to look nice, apply light coats. make sure you give your fingers a rest, because it will start getting numb after 2 wheels. wait till the paint is dry, about 20 mins, and apply the clearcoat. you will only need about 2 light coats. damn almost forgot, i laid some index cards around the tire to protect them from the paint and clearcoat. you can also used tape.

A GOOD LINK

thanks all for the input.... I will post some pics as soon as I can.... I'll give you the before and after. I'm getting the new rotors that Dr. Sound has, cross-drilled and slotted and painting the wheels this weekend, then brakes next weekend.

if you want black, i would use the 500degree paint. use the gloss black. thats what i had last on my wheels and they looked awesome. just make sure the wheels are on a flat surface, this way the paint will cover more area and flatten out really smooth. i am not fond of duplicolor wheel paint because it comes out to "rough".

dude, while your at it I got some gold fender flares if you want, and some red LED lugs.J/K

it don't cost that much for powder coat, and it don't look cheap,it even looks better then auto paint.

hmm trust me, the black paint looks just like powdercoat. guess its one of those gotta see to beleive it things.

you want to scuff the wheels with a fine sand paper to get the paint to stick and the last step in prep should be cleaning them with alcohol to make sure they are actually clean and don't have residue on them.

I vote for powder coating. It's simply better and smoother than paint. Plus it will last longer. 50 bucks a wheel.
