P5 Timing Belt

How many hours labor am I looking at to do the Timing Belt and Waterpump on a 02 Protege 5? Anyone have any idea or insight?

Takes me about 3.5-4 hours. I've done it a few times though. Expect 6 if it's your first time.

Sounds about right...

Maybe do a underdrive pulley while you are in there...

Thats right. I'm about 3 hours total taking my time and I have the whole front of the engine stripped down. I'm not only doing the timing belt, I decided to do everything, seals, waterpump, pulleys.

So If I had a good mechanic doing it for hourly I shouldnt be looking at more then 5 hours or so (I have a really honest, good mechanic that bills out hourly, which I know is hard to find).. Just trying to get my head wrapped around how much its going to be.. Should I get anything else done while the engine is apart?? Keep in mind I bought the car 5K ago and no idea as to the maintenence history..

how many miles on the car? you should do the water pump as well

My competent mechanic billed me for 3.25 hours. Figure 4 hours including the water pump. You can pick up a complete timing belt/water pump kit from Finish Line Performance for $299 shipped.

But those won't be OEM parts and it won't include the water pump, accessory belts, valve cover gasket, cam seals, crank seal, and valve bolt gaskets.

Finish Line Performance parts are not OEM at 299.00. I called them last Tuesday.

I got a whole used 40K mile Japan take out motor for that!!

And then replaced the timing belt and water pump using Mazda parts for another $150. The stuff in there was probably OK, but I wanted to be sure and don't want to be messing with this again in another 50K miles.

Finish Line Performance parts are not OEM at 299.00. I called them last Tuesday.

there is a wholesale mazda parts website that sells discount OEM parts and free shipping for orders over $100. When I ordered it was a dealer in Ohio or somewhere like that. They seem to sell at a 20% or so discount, which when you also add the 9% sales tax I would pay adds up. Anyway - the belt is around $40 and the water pump with gasket and seals is $90 or so - I also picked up a new tensioner spring and one of the freewheel thingies so total it was somewhere around $160. I did not buy the tensioner itself - it really is just a freewheel too - the tension comes from the spring. I really think all you need to replace is the belt, the spring and the water pump. Should be less than $150 in parts from a discount mazda parts dealer, maybe $200 with a valve cover gasket.
