P5 Reverse Noise

Alright, I've just done an exhaustive search on the forums and can't seem to find any threads detailing the noise I'm experiencing.

I have a 2003 Manual P5. When I am moving in reverse there is an intermittent grinding noise. IT IS NOT THE STRAIGHT CUT GEAR NOISE. I know that reverse gear sounds like a wind up toy in most cars, Proteges included...but I repeat, I am not talking about the straight cut gear noise. This is a noise on top of that, that comes in and out and sounds somewhat similar but more grindy.

This noise is driving me absolutely insane. (smash)

My car has 9300 miles on it, and is still under warranty, so I'm gonna have a dealer check it out. I'm afraid they'll find a way around fixing it, so if anybody has had it diagnosed before I want to know what is causing it.

I'm sure there's more to it in your case, but if reverse is only partially engaged, the car will move, but it WILL make grinding noise.

You're not insane as I have heard it as well. First time in reverse I had thought it was partially engaged. I would have to say that it's a gear grinding noise as such, but of a sound I can no describe. I've driven over 50 different cars with standard transmissions and this is weird. Anyone else?

sorry to revive an ancient thread, but i notice the same thing and was wondering if it is normal. My new to me protege with 65k miles has a weird gear grinding noise like every second or so in reverse when engaged (sounds as if its every 1 rotation of the reverse gear if that makes any sense, as it speeds up the faster i go)

if I fully let out the clutch in reverse there is a hesitating feeling every time this noise occurs.

Just wondering if this is normal, thanks.

you sure it's not this noise??

When I go reverse in my P5 I have strait cut whine but it has chirps like theres sections missing?

Weeeeee wah wah wah eeeeeeeeeee wah I've accepted it as normal. Always done it.

If that even puts a sound in your heads.

yea i have a noise to and i dont kno what the hell it is!! its not the noise ur describing its more of a metal to metal scraping, but i put in powerslot rotors and ebc pads so could it be that? cuz its pissin me off and its kinda of embarassing everytime i go into reverse it makes that sound and the whole parking lot turns to look what junker made it lol
