P0715 Code. Need help on how to fix.

I have a P0715 code from my 2002 Protege5. I guess Ill start from the beginning.

I have been having CEL and O/D on and off issues with my car. Car would try to turn over but couldnt and also while driving it would seem like the car is about to die on me. Took to a shop and they got P0300 codes from my car, not sure which one it is, need to dig out papers. Also they found that two of my spark plug wires were cracked and it may be the reason for the starting issue. Went to pick up my car because i needed it for work and school. Guy said that theres something wrong with my Catalytic Converter, something about either not being HOT enough or being too HOT, I think it was NOT being HOT enough. He suggested pumping 89 and higher gas and using Chevron only for 6 months and it should fix the problem. Forgot to mention this happen around Febuary.

Car has been working fine since then. BUT, recently ive been having problems with the car starting again. Checked spark plug wires and they are fine. Checked spark plugs and may have found the problem.

Spark plugs seem to be soaked in gas. When i removed them they smelled of gas. I went and bought V-Power Spark Plugs. Installed them and car worked. Car smelled of gas and idle speed was low on gears, Automatic, around 600-550, seemed like it wanted to die but couldnt. I let the car sit for 5 minutes and everything seemed fine now, car was acting like it should be. Took it for a test drive... and suddenly, CEL and O/D began flashing but car was fine. Went and got the codes and it gave me P0715.

Went looking around for solutions and couldnt find any for my Protege5, only on older Proteges.

Please, any help is much appreciated.

I've had the P0300 cel before on my car and when I did a tune up it seemed to fix the issue. (replaced coil packs, wires, and spark plugs) Now my issue was little different. I could be driving down the road and all of a sudden the car started to bogg down pretty heavey. Pressing the gas didn't seem to help but make it bogg down worse. However All I had to do was pull over shut the car off and literally turn it back on and it was fien for 2 or 3 more days.

Now if your wires are crack i would go ahead and replace those IMO and see what happens. Now the other code I have no idea about.

P.S. You can find the workshop manual for your car here!!! http://protege5.ugly.net/

Yeah i replaced the wires when he told me it was cracked.

I took it to the dealer several days ago and had them do a full diagnostic. They said that the IAC Valve is sticking and that is the problem with my car not starting. total cost is $622. I told them to fix it if that really was the problem. just last night they called me saying that the IAC Valve is not the problem. Hopefully in the next few days they will find out what is wrong and i hope that i dont have to pay the $622 because they said that it was the problem but when they installed it they found that my car couldnt start and realized that it wasnt the problem.

Sorry i took so long reply back. But i got my car fixed last week from the dealer. The thing that was wrong with my car was the Ignition Coils. Both of them are bad. Total cost is $407.50. He said that the IAC Valve is what is causing the car to stall and suggested that that be fix as soon as possible and it is also the cause of the O/D on and off and the CEL. He also recommened a Decarbon service too because of the IAC problem. in total with the IAC and Decarbon it comes too about $756.85. Thats alot of money for a student to come up with...

Does anyone know how to fix these problems? Is it hard for the IAC? Ive search the How to section and searched also but nothing.

Yes. Get 2 coils from napa for like $50 and replace them yourself (10 minutes).

You can seafoam your engine for what? $5, $10 tops? Give me a break. $780 is a ******* joke.

You were screwed. The coils are trivial to replace yourself, but it is essential that you buy them from some place OTHER than the dealer, who has them marked up a LOT. Even with that it looks like they charged you for two or three hours of technician time at $80/hour. A Mazda tech in a service department should be able to change both of the coil packs in about 5 minutes.

I've never replaced an IAC but it doesn't look like it's very hard to get to, once you buy the special bit to fit the bolt heads that hold it on. The part is pretty expensive though, with the two options being $412 and $545 at rockauto.
A lot of people just clean their IAC. If you take it out and it's dirty just clean it and put it back in. Not much work and not much $$$ involved. There's some discussion of the IAC in this thread:

I'm with aMaff on the seafoam. You might as well give that a shot before paying the dealer $150 or $200 to do more or less the same thing.
