our cars (cdn anyway) are governed at 190 km/h

sucks huh? I tried last night.
also I really hate second and third gear in our cars, if it wern't for the notchyness I would love it but god damn.... I HATE THE NOTCHYNESS

I dont think they are goverened... they just font have any give after that speed (approximately). Some people on this board have hit just above 200 km/h....

We dont have a huge power plant since the Protege is not a sports car, therefore I see no reason for a governor.

What RPM's did you hit at that speed in 5th... just a curious question.
If you were at redline then that will explain why it would not go any more.....

5,600 rpm and that makes sense because according to the dino sheets there is no useable power from there on, so really that just proves it. the guys that have gone 200 km/h wanted to sound good or just rounded because it was close anyway.
(unless they were on a hill heh)
but yeah, I prolly just ran out of useable power.
need more I think.. but first I will make the tranny nice.. if i can.

There's no governor on mine.

Got it to 192kph. Watched as the speed changes with the hills.

Thing is, my stock 94 Civic automatic [102hp, no vtec] can get to it's governed fuel cutoff 195kph much quicker than the P5.:wtf:

Different gearing.

There is no governor. Car & Driver reported that top speed is drag limited to 118mph, which is just over 190 km/h.

this is all ture...and has been hashed over MANY TIMES....there is NO govenor on our cars...the only LIMITER is the REV limiter....which is about 7200 or something like that.

and how fast you or car and driver could get one of our cars depends on a lot of things....like what elevation you are at...the outside air temp.....humidity.....and more importantly....wind speed and direction when you were making your run.

but our cars are DEFINATELY drag limited.....as the guys that have turboed their cars have gone a LOT faster.

well said

umm since we're talking about the limits and stuff..
can anyone tell me what is
1. the governor?
2. rev limit ( is this the redline?)
3. drag limit?

thxs..

I have a 2003 MP5 and have hit a governor at 132 MPH at 6000 RPM in 6th gear. That should be around 210 or 212 km/h i think.

It is different than the rev limiter I have also hit that by accident in 3 rd gear getting on the freeway.

I know a guy with an orange MSP with 12 lbs of boost and he says he hits a governor at 137 mp/h (around 228 km/h).

Go figure?

But these are American versions.

I'm in Canada, and the mp3 at least, I can tell you there no govener at 190, matter of fact, I can say there is non until at least 132mph....fast as I ever had her going.

As for the Speed, well, only 500kms on it yet, so I'm hardly hitting those speeds. only ever really did twice in the mp3 in the 2 years I had it anyways.

The MP5 is not governed,

Hovever to go faster you have to modify the internals in the transmission. Namely Taller 5th gear. The problem with that is that when you do that the car accelerates to the top speed slower. On my MP5, I have a stand alone fuel system that feeds an extra two injectors and a Turbo. There is no problem with fuel cut off. The car accelerates much better. The red line is still a limiter on mine. It really depends on how much you hate your car. Enjoy Warp 1

WHAT rednecks_r_us HAS A 6TH GEAR??
whats he driving? msp5 has 5gears.

OOPS, (hand) good catch I meant 5th gear. My Ninja has 6 gears a much higher redline and its top speed isn't 132.

I've still only been able to get the MP5 to 132 in 5th gear @ 6000 RPM then the engine cuts out and then picks back up at 130.

I haven't tried top speed since I put on the K&N either.

Oh well, maybe someday I'll legally see top speed on a race track or drag strip instead of a long flat county road.

In the mean time I'll enjoy the car as is. If I want a faster car then maybe a RX8 could be next.

Later Y'all,

Bill

well Redneck...you are correct about one thing for sure...you stated that your friends MSP has one...and that is true...the MSP does have a speed govenor....

but the P5 does not. not sure what you did at 6K....maybe you were really concentrating at looking where you were going...and you were going down hill with a tailwind and got to the rev limiter? don't know.....but really guys....there is no speed gov on a P5....

to answer Edisons questions..

1. Govenor.....as in SPEED govenor....it is a piece of equipment on your car...or its programed into the ECU that when your car reaches a predetermined speed, the car basically shuts off till it slows down a bit then its on again....usually done either buy shutting down the fuel supply or by killing the ignition.

2. Rev Limit....that is the MAX rpm that the manufacturer has determined for the car to run at....our cars have a REV LIMITER, which kills the ignition at a predetermined rpm to keep you from doing REAL damage to your cars engine....its ABOUT 7100 rpm

3. DRAG LIMITED.....this is what our cars ARE....drag is the resistance to movement thourh the AIR....once your car runs out of power to push your car through the air any faster...it becomes drag limited....depending on how much drag your car has....it takes X amount of power to make it go just so fast.....our cars run out of power before we run into the rev limiter and just can't go any faster.

there are numerous factors that will effect your top speed....I listed a few in my previous post....such as your areas ALTITUDE, the humidity....the road your are on....if you have a cross wind or a tail wind or a head wind.....lots of stuff.

governor?

i understand the function of the rev limiter which is there for the protection of the engine..... but why would the manufacturer install the speed governor? it just doesnt make any sense...

so they can get away with cheap low speed tires and not having them blow up when some idiot does ludicrous speed

Tires and I guess safety and emissions have something to do with it.

Although I bet my cousin's M3 can easily go well over the 155mph cutoff.
