Opinion on "Turboing" an Auto (non-sport)

I'm planning on going turbo in a year or two, when I can get a cheap beater to use as my daily driver. If you really like the car I say go for it. Just have some money saved up "just in case."

I think I'll Give it a try as soon as I get some money together...
I'm thinking turbo 4-5psi (rear-mount if I can find one), EMS, torque converter, and tranny cooler; for try-out period.

BTW, jackin' my own thread here, where can I get one of these rear lips?

Not sure, I have a sedan. The one in the pic you referenced was CF. Some P5 owners have just painted that area flat black.

Idk geep, I would have to agree w/brian on the evo... looks pretty bad ass imo. White or course :) Anyways bazooka is using the 1st gen mam sleeper manifold and down pipe with a gt28rs I believe. If you have a look in the FS section, linux is selling the same manifold and down pipe, and I am selling a gt28r. Think linux is asking 350 for his stuff, and I could def. hook you up with the turbo if you think it's something you might want to pursue. With the tial 5lb spring, you should get the nice lil pep you're looking for no problem me thinks...

"tial 5lb spring"?
I have no clue what you mean by that?

meaning the spring in the wastegate will squish down at 5 pounds of boost and open the wastegate. hence 5 pounds of boost

Ok thanks...

One more question:
What kind of EMS mods do I need to do to run a turbo?
Cause I know that one from a MSP wont work cause my tranny is controlled by the computer and manuals obviously aren't.

The Haltech F10X would work, Comes with the HiBoost kits, been proven to work on auto's before. An E6X would prolly be too much for your application. Perhaps an MPI or other sort of piggyback would work too. There is plenty of debate on EMS's someone will have a different opinion.

But how do I progam it?
I dont know what I'd need for a turbo set-up.
does the manufacturer program it for me?

I'm in the same boat man (trying to decide on ems). If you go with the haltech, you can get it all tuned out down in Miami by Juan of Hiboost. Microtech (what I'm leaning towards) is tuned well by central florida turbo. The MPI tuner can be tuned by the end user via a lap top... but I hear it's a friggin pain in the ass unless you have someone with you that is pretty experienced with the unit. So ya, right now it's a toss up. The cheaper MPI is prob all I need, but I don't want to hassle with tuning it myself. Haltech means driving to miami for the tune it deserves, and microtech is about a grand, but cheap tuning is 20 minutes away (well, 45 for you lol).

I'd recommend the Microtech. It is going to be the best bang for your buck. If you buy it from NSN or Protege Garage, you will get excellent support/installation help from Steve at NSN. If you have the money, go for the PLX wideband as well. You won't be fighting with the stock ECU and you'll have the ability to adjust and control so much more with the Microtech.

This is, unfortunately, a non-owner's opinion. I've ridden in a few cars with a Microtech and checked out the software to tune them. Once you've got a good base tune, it is very trivial to tweak it yourself on the fly with a laptop.

If you buy a hiboost kit it'll have a base map on it. You say you can tune an MPI yourself but you have to take it to a shop to tune a Haltech or Microtech? You can tune all that s*** yourself. Haltech offer's their software on their website.

I know the owners of Central Florida Turbo, so I'll have go visit them sometime and see what they say, and try to get a good deal while I'm at it...(laugh) muah ha ha ha ha!!!
So microtech is the most recomended.
I'll have to start looking for all the stuff i need and get some prices.
If anyone has a list of parts needed for a turbo kit, I'd greatly appreciate it if you could post it or PM it to me.
Thanks guys for all your input.

do a search, plenty of people have their projects posted up in threads.

Sorry but what exactly is that?
How much?

it is a piggy back, can control fuel and timing...i'm using it on my car...it does a good job, but takes time time tune...doesn't come with a base map....i've got a pretty good tune at 5 psi i'm running about 11.5 afr's. you could probably get by with a voltage clamp and FMU (vortec or other). it would be cheaper!
