Open Source (Linksys WRT54G)

Very interesting. That's the power of the GPL.

<-- walks downstairs to find out what model number router he has.

Yup my Linksys wireless router isn't 'stock' lol. The reason why I picked the Linksys was simply because of the fact that its firmware is open source and upgradable. I could even modify it myself if I was ever so inclined.

I've got a WRT54GC. Only a letter off and looks cuter, but none of that stuff is available to me, unfortunately. Luckily, all I need it to do is work as a router/access point, and work well.

so without me clicking that link and reading the article what can i make my router do that it doesn't already do. does it work better?

that's kinda wild. i don't know what i'd need to upgrade it for, but i have 2 WRT54Gs, one for home and one for home at school. i'm not completely understanding the article, but i'm gonna look at those other firmware sites that can flash new firmware on and see what features they have

w00t, i need to get one of these routers. I see a dirty scheme im hatching.

Here's the skinney:

If you want to do this, STAY AWAY FROM VERSION 5 (the latest) of the WRT54G, as it nolonger uses the Embeded Linux Firmware, and is rumored to have less RAM, and Storage. I found out when I unwittingly got mine from Best Buy on Saturday afternoon. Come 11 P.M., I found the warning here, and was able to go to Walmart and pick up a Version 3 (CDF8) for $50. I had to call Gimpo02 up on the phone to look up the serial numbers for me since I forgot my list at home. Props! I returned the version 5 to Best Buy the next day. Versions 1-4 are what you want. How do you know which version is which? Here is a little hint:

Before you buy find the Linksys sticker on the outside of the box (or bottom of your router if already open). Find the serial number (S/N) and most importantly the first 4 letters of it.

Secondly, look below to find your hardware version.

CDF0 = WRT54G v1.0
CDF1 = WRT54G v1.0
CDF2 = WRT54G v1.1
CDF3 = WRT54G v1.1
CDF5 = WRT54G v2.0
CDF7 = WRT54G v2.2
CDF8 = WRT54G v3.0
CDF9 = WRT54G v3.1
CDFA = WRT54G v4.0
CDFB = WRT54G v5.0 <-- STAY AWAY FROM THIS VERSION!!!!

CGN0 = WRT54GS v1.0
CGN1 = WRT54GS v1.0
CGN2 = WRT54GS v1.1
CGN3 = WRT54GS v2.0
CGN4 = WRT54GS v2.1
CGN5 = WRT54GS v3.0
CGN6 = WRT54GS v4.0

SJH0 = WTR54GS v1.0

Know that the GS models are faster, and have more RAM for customization.

Until the WRT54G came along, these used to be exclusive features of expensive Cisco routers in the $1k range. It is in our reach for under $100. You also have the added bonus of having a little low-powered Linux box running.
