One Year Ownership

:
Mazdaspeed6
Yesterday (3/10) marked one year of ownership for my CX-5 Touring, w/ Tech and Bose.
Right at 16,750 miles of service. It is a very early build.

Just want to chime in that my wife and I both still love it. If I could go back, wait for some of the newer makes/models, hold off for the 2.5l, whatever, I wouldn't. Very satisfied.

Mileage has been consistent at 30 MPG. Average speed is 32-33 MPH.

Rattles aside, I've had two minor issues. A clunk developed in the steering column, felt over bumps and dips and such. Dealer retorqed control arm mounting bolt, and it resolved the issue. Second issue (still on-going), is the passenger airbag disable light remains illuminated at all times, when there isnt an occupant in the seat. Haven't had it in yet to get it resolved, but there is a TSB for this issue.

Everything else is still rock solid. When temps get low (freezing), the suspension will let out a few creaks when backing out of the garage and down the driveway. Have 2-3 rattles I need to dampen in various areas in the interior.
But, still love zipping around in it. Love the tech. Bose is leagues better than the Blose in my MS6. And the AA HIDs continue to impress. Great output, great cutoff. Love them.

I think overall the CX-5 trends on very reliable. I have been apart of quite a few auto web forums, and the gas CX-5 has had very few common major issues crop up.
After being apart of the original Mazdaspeed6 online communities, trust me, the CX-5 is rock solid in comparison. :D

Thanks for sharing. I've been wondering if I wanted to get the HID lights, you may have convinced me.

Thanks for the report, I'll be hitting 16K miles and one year mark next week.

Only issue was dash rattle noise (cold weather), nearly eliminated by TSB fix at dealer in February.

Thanks for the excellent report!

I've had mine just over 7 months and I think I love it more than when it was new!

I just experienced my first warranty item yesterday - when put in reverse the back-up camera comes on but has mostly static which is then followed by a blue screen. I'll let the dealer fix/replace it.

Always makes me feel warm and fuzzy to hear from happy owners.

Funny... we picked ours up at the end of Feb (was actually the first "sellable" unit the dealer ordered), and the wife has accumulated nearly the same miles (GT w/Tech).

We have the clicking which requires the shroud removal, just haven't taken it in. Also the steering alignment is slightly off, but otherwise the car has been fantastic.

No wishes about having more power, etc.

When I can tell someone we can take a 500+ mile roadtrip in a crossover and yield 35 mpg, all I do is smile with what we have.

Glad to hear you're enjoying ownership after 1 year.

I'll mention the TSB for the air bag light when I bring mine in for 1000 mile check up since it remains on like yours. Would have thought they would have corrected this on later builds. It even states in the OM:
If the front passenger weight sensors are normal, the indicator light illuminates when the
ignition is switched ON. The light turns off after a few seconds.

It has a mixed message because then right below that it shows that the light should be on if the seat is empty:

but then at another place in the manual it says it uses the seat belt as part of the system and I was surprised that it doesn't show the "off" light only when the seat belt is fastened and the weight criteria don't make it turn on the airbag.

So, is it supposed be go off or stay on if the seat is unoccupied.

That's the question.... The part above the chart makes it sound like it should go off after a few seconds but the chart shows it should be on. I don't know if the top part means if someone is there it should still light for a few seconds and then go off, which it does do.

The light in mine is on as long as the seat is empty.

either way it is better than the 2 Chevy Cruzes we looked at, both of which kept turning off the airbag with a 5'5" passenger in the seat.

Interesting...that document does indicate it should remain on while there isn't an adult occupant.

However, mine didn't do this when it was new. It became an issue at maybe 13-14K miles. I am pretty observent by nature. I don't think it is something I missed.
IIRC, my Speed6 (and most other makes/models) will not deploy bags without detecting an adult occupant, but only use a light to signal specifically that it is deactivated because there is a child, or undersized occupant in the passenger seat.

It is on by default when no one is sitting is the seat, it signifies that it is disabled, no need to have an airbag armed if it does not need to go off. When it says "When the ignition is set to ON" means the first push without your foot on the brake. Otherwise it is one when the car is ON.

As I stated, that is pretty normal these days (disable bags when no occupant detected). What is abnormal, is to have the dummy light illuminated at all times.
Any other make/model will only illuminate the lamp when an underweight occupant is in the passenger seat.

Anyway, I keep finding this with Google searches, and this is taken directly from nhtsa webpage...

I've had my 2013 Touring for 9 months, almost 10k miles now. My only issue is the driver's seat cushion, which came loose and ripped where is clips to the frame. The seat has some movement, but so did my CX9 before it. I love the good gas mileage, and I love the way the car drives. I'm well satisfied with the engine/trans combo. The only thing I'd do over again is get a GT. I really miss my climate control, and the heated seats while waiting for the blue temperature light to go off would be nice too, but in my experience the heat was blowing warm before the seats warmed up in previous cars.

In fact, I confirm that it's the same thing in the CX-5: it takes at least 5 minutes to warm up the seats...

My experience after a year with GT is the heated seats warm me up well before the climate control/heater gives off hot air and well before blue light goes out.

I agree....although my hood shakes a little...my seats warm up like in a minute and for sure way before warm air is even coming out the vent. Will not buy another car without them...my wife would agree with that statement.

11 + months, 14,300 miles, and still loving mine. Had a few rattle issues too but Mazda fixed those and I fixed one. Currently the ave gas mileage trip is at 37 mpg all highway coming home today and doing 65 mph. I got 32.6 MPG doing 70 mph on the tank before that calculated at the pump. I also think the power of my 2.0 is actually pretty good especially considering the gas mileage I get.

Good write up IHeartGroceries.

Does anyone have the specific TSB number? I asked my dealer and there clueless

Do you mean for the air bag illuminator?

Still waiting to hear from others if this is indeed a non-issue. I mean, I am fine with it being on. But, it was NOT on when I purchased the vehicle. It didn't illuminate until after my latest service at the dealer.
And like I said, it is pretty unusual for it to illuminate at all times. I have only ever seen it illuminate in other vehicles, my MS6 included, when there's 5-50 lbs. in the seat.
