Tanked up yesterday.

500.3 miles
14.169 gallons
35.309 mpg

And I drive the '5 hard, no hyper mileage stuff.
90% of this last tank was 65-75 mph, the rest poking in city traffic.

I've been trying to hit a 500 mile tank since I bought the ride new.

What changed? Mods?

Wow! That's incredible to know that our cars can do that. Is yours manual or automatic?

The best I've ever got is 7.3L/100KM (~32.221 mpg) on a 560KM trip back from Toronto (I used less than 3/4 of a tank!).

i got 34.3 yesterday. id say about 85% highway at above 70mph. for some reason when i baby it i get like 25 but when i romp on her she gets better mileage. ive gotten over 40 before too haha but that was 98% highway on a hot day with no traffic.

So the trick seems to be to drive quickly :)

I'd love to see a speed vs fuel economy graph for our cars. Is it possible to get real-time fuel usage from an OBDII scanner on our cars?

if you got 35mpg while city driving i'd applaud. but since it wasnt mostly city i wont. but its still good nonetheless

i've been seeing around 34 highway since i added in my mp3 ECU, but my city has gone down to around 24. problem is is that even after having the damn thing for a few months now its still too much damn fun. when the car pulls like a maniac you keep going.

Mods: Injen CAI, 4-2-1 header, cat/resonator, Magnaflow CB, light pulleys, flashed ECU (done by a former very friendly Mazda service manager/wrench who had tech buds working Mazda North America send him software), Indium plugs. Dynoed (DynoJet) 116 whp, 123 lbs/ft torque. Manual box. BTW, 195/55/16 winter tires.

Have to agree with some of you--baby it, mileage seems to drop; these engines run rich anyway, and this can be seen at lower revs on a dyno.

Heavy city driving's gonna put a big crimp in mileage; my wife's '03.5 ES runs 27-30.

Sorry, I don't really understand what you mean by "baby it" and "big crimp in mileage". Are you saying because the engine runs rich, you might as well drive it hard??? (dunno)

hes saying drive it slow instead. dont floor it anywhere and shift between 2-3k rpm.

Congrats 0n 500 mile tank w/ aggressive driving! Too much fun to drive the P5 lightly.

5 -speed, Premium non-ethenol. 90% freeway.
Summer 33-34, winter 26.

Out of curiosity, ran a few DULL test rides last couple of summers. Fill to top of fuel filler tube. Newer Dunlops, 44psi, new air filter, new plugs.
On to freeway, 3 hrs cruise control, off freeway, refill.
37, 37, & 39 mpg.

P5 - No dull Prius ride here!

yeah Stickman I concur with your experience. Take it real easy and flirt with 40mpg. As for the OP, he's in Denver. I did great out there last summer. We usually think "altitude - bummer" due to the limit on peak power. But there may be an edge to mileage there. What's the main source of resistance the engine overcomes at highway speed? How's that vary at altitude? (PS since cold air is denser, this might also partially explain poorer winter mileage.)

I just got 31 MPG freeway, about 390 miles on one tank. That's going 60 -70mph on a slower highway, a lot of the time I am doing about 80 and that gets me about 27 - 28 MPG.

Have any of you noticed a difference by removing the rack bars on top? I am thinking of doing that soon to see what happens.
