Yes, a substantially sized SUV versus econobox will consume more fuel, today CX-5 is best in its class for mileage.
New member here and first post. I picked mine up a week ago and I'm at 245 miles and averaging 22.1 MPG. My previous car was advertised at 17MPG but was averaging 13.2MPG. I'm not a speed demon or a jack rabbit at the light, but we do have one big factor that affects our MPG here. We live on an island. If you look on Google map, we don't have any straight or level streets here except for Waikiki. Our major metro freeway has only three lanes on each side and a recent study pegged Honolulu as the worst U.S. city for traffic at 58 hours of sitting in traffic per year. I don't think any person or deity can match the manufacturer's posted city mpg in "normal" Honolulu driving conditions. If you've ever resided or visited Honolulu, I'm sure you're aware that we're not lead footed drivers here.
I'm happy with the MPG on my new ride. It will probably snow in Waikiki before I reach that posted City 26MPG.

I started off in the mid 30's when I first got the car and drove it on the highway mostly. Once I started driving to work with it in the congestion, stop and go all you can ask that figure dropped to 22.7 which is where I'm at now.
I am not complaining, my driving habits are poor, very aggressive, changing lanes constantly to avoid the slow ass drivers out there. On the highway I am a lot calmer and I see those digits slide up... for example in a 30 minute drive on the highway my average MPG goes up .5 MPG.

Advertised/Government gas mileage is determined by a standard driving profile for city & highway driving. It demonstrates what a NORMAL driver should expect. I have always found that my vehicles agreed quite close with the advertised mileage, except when I drove downtown in Chicago or drove 80 mph on the highway. MO is, if your mileage is considerably lower than the Government ratings that there is a reason-unusual traffic, vehicle in poor state of tune or aggressive driving. Ed
Just read through the post on this thread and I am quite surprised as to what you guys are posting. Before I disclose my MPG's I will say that my past two cars have been a modified mustang putting 400hp/430torque on the wheels and a Cx-7 Turbo (Yeah clear sign of getting old, I just keep hacking away at the power of my cars) hence my driving habits are anything but mellow. That said I do try to squeeze some power out of the Cx-5.
I life in Florida and my city driving is in Gainesville I also make multiple trips to Jacksonville, Lake Butler, and Lake City ( this one is all highway). Around gainesville I get 29 mpg's, 32 to lake city, and 38-39 for Jacksonville and Lake Butler.
Granted, Florida is really flat which may help the situation.

After 1700 miles I am happy to observe excellent mileage. Best tank, 33.6 (avg) worst, 28.5 (avg). Now, here are my qualifiers, I drive like grandma in this vehicle. And I find that I really enjoy driving the cx5 like she would, its just a nice car to slow down with. I can't believe whati just wrote.
Had my best tank to date 27.9 city driving and 34.7 on the highway. I experimented driving like a zombie to get these figures. Stay in one lane, maintain a safe speed (70MPH on GSP and Turnpike) and for city keep a steady acceleration rate and not gun it to 3-4,000 RPM etc. So yes it is how you drive for obvious reasons. I think I will keep this up as it was less stressful also.
One of the things I learned from driving my CRZ was there are rarely reasons to rev the engine to 3000 rpm before shifting. The CRZ had a light below the tach that would indicate suggested shift points. In city traffic it was suggesting shifting around 1800 to 2000 rpm. I thought, "you've got to be kidding". But for the hell of it, I started going along with the suggested shift points. My mileage increased dramatically. I had been averaging around 35 mpg and the next tank was at 42 mpg.
Now I use the same methods with the CX-5 without even thinking about it. The other day I realized I had already unconsciously shifted into 4th gear while finding the exit to the Lowes parking lot and I was only going 15 mph. Why drive around in a lower gear than is necessary? It justs wastes gas. Boring you say? I have hit the rev limiter while passing cars on two lane roads. When I absolutely need passing power, I wind the engine out, but those occasions are relatively rare. Right now, I am disappointed when my tank average drops below 33 mpg. I gotta stay ahead of vfrguy and V8toilet.(2cents)

I agree Lando. I'm presently driving a Mazda CX7 turbo and let the AT shift as low as possible which is ~2,000 rpm. I consistently get 20-22 mpg depending on AC on time. When I merge onto the expressway, I let the turbo wind and the tachometer hit the 5,500 rpm shift point--fun fun fun.
That's my problem... let it go to 2.5k on the tach and it takes a good dip down to 18mpg. =D

Are those figures actually calculations at fill up or are you just going by the trip computer? The trip computer is never accurate so don't base it off of that. Calculate it at every fill up and see how it varies from tank to tank. The AWD is rated 25 city and 31 highway so it depends what type of commute you do and your driving style. If you do mostly city and drive fairly aggresively it will be on the lower end of the spectrum. After the 3,000-4,000 mile mark you should see a rise in mileage as well. I'm curious why you did your first oil change at 3,000 miles?

Not sure if I'm doing something wrong(user error) or what but my MPG digital read out ALWAYS reads 27.4, as well as my MPH average is always 27
which is impossible. I mean I get great gas mileage but the read out seems to be stuck, do I have to do anything?
does your read out change w/ every trip?

That's what I did (never been reset), so my long term average is showing. Compared to my spreadsheet tracking MPG since day 1, the average shown on dash is about 97% accurate.
How do you reset the averages? The only thing that manipulates them is the info button on the wheel? What do I do to reset it?
