Ok, Gas Mileage SUCKS!

I live in the Chicago area and do about 95% city driving, most are short trips. First few days I was getting about 27-28 mpg. Now that it is a few days old my foot is getting a bit more heavy and I am getting around 25-26mpg.

Yep, my heavy foot and about 80% city driving gets me consistently 26 mpg average.

Just finished a road trip from Toronto area to Chicago and back. About 1,700 km. almost all highway and I can't complain.

First tank was 35.5 mpg. 110km pretty much the whole tank.

32.8 mpg on second. 120km in highways an some downtown Chicago driving.

33.6 on the way home.

2 people and luggage. Great highway cruiser.

Averaging 26.5-28 MPG consistently now on mostly 45 MPH road with lights that are horribly synchronized meaning I am stuck in a light almost every other one. Not bad, have not done any long highway driving at consistent high speed to get a decent highway MPG count.

I averaged 6.5 L /per 100 Kim's on a 700 km trip recently I was really impressed considering I sped a bit :)

Have had my CX-5 AWD since early April. Lived with the sub-par mpg initially thinking the car needed to be broken in. After 1000 miles, I was only getting 22.6mpg. Now, at 3034 (at the dealership for its 1st oil change), I'm still only getting 22.6mpg.

Seriously disappointed in this thing. Not even getting the 28mpg that was advertised.

Will likely be trading this thing in the first chance I get. :'(

Yes, you bought the wrong class of vehicle, being a compact AWD SUV.

Did you trade it yet?

Btw- 28mpg combined rating assumes 45% highway/55% city.

I am averaging between 35-37 mpg's. I confirmed the mpg's when refilling the tank - not just by the car computer. I don't drive agressively at all. I have the CX-5 Sport, 6-speed manual. Just a little over 2000 miles since purchasing 6 weeks ago. I have a 35 mile round trip to work each day over 40 mph roads plus a few 200+ mile camping trips. Very happy with my CX-5 and happy to sacrifice a little horsepower for mpg's.

I'm pretty jealous of any of you netting over 30.
Ours sees a healthy diet of about 50/50 city/highway, I'd guess, and it averages 30 MPG pretty steadily. Actually, I'm pretty impressed, given my old lady has a pretty heavy foot leaving from a stop.

I've never gotten over 30mpg, including on a 340 mile highway trip at 70mph taking it easy. Maybe it is because we are located in the foothills of the Ozarks and there are a lot of hills on the interstates here, but still the best I have gotten was 28mpg (on the trip I just mentioned). Around town, I get 22-23mpg, mainly because the wife doesn't know how to drive for economy and its mostly her vehicle for now. In November, we will be taking it on an over 2000-mile road trip, and I hope to average over 30mpg (assuming we don't get hammered with snow), so we will see. If I could get 30mpg around here, I'd be completely happy with that, and as I said before, 28mpg is much better than the 16 I was getting in the F150 we traded for it...

I have the AWD touring/tech,right now I am getting 27.5 mpg on 87 octane at 1300 miles was 25 when pulled it off lot at 100 miles. The cx has taken my lead foot from lights away which was a lesson but still go 5-10 above limit,One thing I found out on mine is if I am on a long road with no lights I use the cruize.Alot better than my other cars except for 88 prelude,it gets 35mpg at 130,000 miles.

Touring Front wheel drive.... Highway miles. First time to reach 39mpg ave, its usually around 33mpg.

Come on man you just filled up and reset the MPG :D I get in the 40's in the first 5-10 miles or so then my wife gets it down to the 27-29's.

oh, I didnt know that, i filled up the tank, reset it and went home and got surprised then took a picture. i will see on my next trip. it was always around 33 on highway even if i just filled up the tank. :)

I would really like to hypermile a long trip with the CX-5. I did it ounce with my '01 Protege 1.6 auto, round trip from Houston to Dallas (about 500 miles). The protege was rated at 23/30/26 and I got over 38mpg. I wonder is I can hit 40 with the CX-5.

I make no attempt to hypermile, I drive 80% in heavy city/suburban traffic, I keep my foot into it as needed and for fun.

My gas mileage sucks, 26.1 over 9K miles.

But oh wait... That's exactly what it's advertised to be given the 25 CITY, 31 HIGHWAY gas mileage ratings (80% city=26.2mpg).

No, seriously I am not surprised by it's best in class fuel economy since I read the numbers prior to purchase.

Want better gas mileage? Run the HELL out of it!

So we picked up our new CX-5 a few months back. Noticed in the beginning that we were getting about 25 MPG in the city. About 1.5 months ago we installed a tow hitch and a hauled a Uhaul 5x8 trailer towing about 1500 pounds all together plus 5 passengers/cargo 850 miles from Texas to Arizona. This was a pretty good break in for the CX-5 going through the hill country and mountain portions of I-10. After getting to AZ we noticed a dramatic increase in gas mileage. Right now were at 30-31 MPG IN THE CITY! Could probably push it further IF we hyper-miled. CX-5 hasn't seen many highway miles since the move but, were planning a Grand Canyon trip soon and am curious to see the HWY mileage after the break in. I would expect better than 35MPG at this point.

My suggestion, is to not be afraid to break the engine in a bit more. Find some hilly terrain/curves and give it a work out. We're at about 4500 miles and plan to change the oil at about 5k for the first change. Hoping to increase mileage even further after the change. Tire pressures are at about 39psi.

Cheers!

34mpg on a short road trip this weekend. I filled up Friday night in Santa Barbara, then drove quite a few short distances around town during the weekend and back to San Diego today. I filled up when I was about a mile from my house and it only took just under 8 gallons. That was with 4 adults in the car, bags and a cooler, the AC ran the whole time and freeway speeds were 70-75. So, so happy!
