Oil Leak 2004 Mazda 3

I have an 04 Mz 3 with less than 60k miles on it. I just starting noticing small quarter sized drops of oil on my garage floor. I took it to my guy that does my oil changes to make sure it's not the filter or the oil pan leaking. Neither one are leaking. Seems to be a seal going bad. The oil is gathering on the bottom of the motor in small amounts. I can't tell if it is leaking from a side cover or not. Anyone had this issue? Should this be covered under warranty? Any suggestions????

under 60k i would definetely have a dealer look at that and cover it under warranty. could be any number things like a rear main seal

That's what my oil change guy said also. Anything I should get them to do since I have it in and it is pretty close to the 60k limit?

timing belt would not be a bad idea at this mileage

Am I better off getting them to replace that? Money wise wouldn't I be better at a local shop? Anything under warranty I should get them to look at?

a local shop will be buying the parts from the dealer at a discount regardless unless they use non-OE parts. get a quote and my bet is the dealer will match the price for you. all in the name of customer satisfaction :)

they should do a once over on the car and check it out for issues while they do the leak check

No belt, the 3 uses a timing chain.

My 04 only had a 48 month 50000 mile warranty.
So the corporate office for Mazda said for me to take it to the dealer and see if they can offer me goodwill. Is that going to be only parts? That will only save me like $30 if so. Is this typically a $300-$500 type thing to have done?

if you're getting a leak from the oil filter area, the oil filter cartridge housing cover could be cracked... this can happen even if proper tools/procedures were used during oil change... a revised cover has been released about 4 months ago in which thicker plastic is being used... there is no revised part number but you can tell which one is the new part by looking at the inside bottom of the cover... there will be a circular date code stamp (bunch of numbers like a clock with an arrow in the middle)... the earlier (bad) part has a gap between the stamp and the inner wall of the housing... the revised part does not...

because mazda is aware of this particular oil filter housing issue, it is now covered under warranty (replaced with revised part) regardless of whether the oil changer broke the housing or not... I don't believe it would be warrantable if it is broken with the revised part due to human error

Good Call THE MAN. I took it in today and that is exactly what was wrong. Stupid oil change people over tightened the drain plug on the oil filter and cracked the cap.

I just found out that my Mazda 3 2004 (with less than 50,000 miles) needs major engine repair as a result of a tiny crack in the oil filter cap. I took the car in for minor service repair (per manufacturer) less than 5,000 miles ago and the leak wasn't detected. The oil light never went on. Since I park on the street, I never noticed an oil leak. Is the mechanic at fault for not noticing the issue during the service 6 months ago? Based on other posts, it seems the cap used in 2004s is faulty, so can I get Mazda to pay for the rebuild/repair?

If it's under 50,000miles, isn't it still under warranty? Anyway, did you have any luck. I'm wondering the same thing since it appears as though the place I last took my '04 for an oil change may have damaged my filter cap also. Luckily, I purchased a new warranty when I paid off the car so hopefully they will honor it and all will be well. What was the major repair you needed? What was the cost?
