oil filters for p5

I use a Wix filter for a Chevy 350 motor. (nana) It's humungous, but my filter is located under my coolant resivior now.(butt)

I use the Bosche Oil filters, very similar to the mobil 1 but half the price. I get them at Autozone.

Maxx, autozone carries k&n air filters, as do 90% of other auto parts stores. No go on the oil there though.

I'm in Canada, eh? Things are a bit tougher to find LOL!

If you do use a larger than OEM sized filter, make sure that the relief valve setting is the same as OEM, ~ 14-18 PSI.

...

Can anyone else confirm these 14-18 psi specs?

Is anyone else concerned that the K&N HP-1004 pressure relief valve specs at 11-14 psi don't even overlap the Mazda OEM oil filter settings at 14-18 psi? Wouldn't this mean that the K&N oil filter will allow unfiltered oil back into the engine when it shouldn't?

Thanks!

used to use Fram for awhile and recently changed to Mobil1 since Wal-Mart carries it now.

Why would it be fine? What's the purpose of having a pressure relief valve if any manufacturer can make a different filter with specifications that are completely outside the OEM specifications?

The HP-1004 is fine. You're over complicating something. Can't see the forest through all the trees kinda thing...

There's a mechanic I trust in the Mid-Atlantic area that says a bigger-than-stock oil filter can be bad for the engine. If the filter sits empty or partially empty while the engine is off, then it is going to take more time to fill and pressurize by the oil pump at startup. This robs the valvetrain from oil during the critical first second or two of operation. This time adds up over hundreds of starts and could wear some parts of the engine well beyond their actual milage.

All this seems logical to me, but I have never really heard any other direct evidence to support his claims. Of course, if a larger filter was that much better, why wouldn't manufactures spec them as OEM? I mean, filters are CHEAP protection for engines...

Ensure the filter has an anti-drain back feature. Bigger filter holds more oil.

Fram Tough Guard[tm] has anti-drain back.

I asked the same question when I got my P5 because the oil filter is about the size of half a soda can. I wanted the bigger filter not for more oil capacity, but for more surface area for filter media. I would think that allows better flow and better filtering

$0.02

protegegarage shipped me a HP-1008 is that still gonna work?
is the HP-1004 for the 626?
