Oil Filter Location!!!!

you are just suypposed to take some oil, rub it around the seal, and hand tighten the filter.

All you need are some ramps. Roll the car up, crawl underneath (comfortably), loosen and tighten by hand when done. Problem solved, everyone is happy :) Just did my oil change today what a coincidence.

:D So which filter has the best filter element? and what kind of oil filtration tests did you do to reach your final conclusion?
Somebody has to have that website. I'm not gonna do the searching, but a loooong while back (close to a year I think) there was a thread with a link to a website that had done tests on a lot of popular filters. Mobil 1 came out ahead, and fram was second from the bottom. They did real scientific, laboratory tests testing the filtration quality and flow capacity, as well as the strength of the filter elements themselves. Like I said, Mobil 1 won out by a long shot and Fram bit the big one.

Fram = teh suck.

And what's the advantage of having a v-6 filter? More oil capacity so it stays cooler? Or something else entirely?

next time you're in an auto store, open up a fram filter and look inside... its a paper filter lining as opposed to metal on the other ones (i think its metal)... fram, although it seems to get the job done, just seems to be a little less well made. i personally am gonna start ordering the k&n filters online @ 8.95 (buy in bulk of 3)

I'd think that a larger SHOULD have more filter area and that MAY give better filtration. No harm anyway. I've been using the Mazda OEM V6 filters and not a single problem so far.

You can reach the filter from the top of the motor too. Its a little awkward but that is how I get to it.

Wow, I have never had any problems getting to or getting off the oil filter. I just jack up the car, drain the oil, use a rag and twist the filter off. It is a little tight, just put some muscle into it. Also, just get right under it and there is a really good hole for your arm to fit through. Takes me 15 minutes max to change the oil and filter. Most of that is watching the oil drain. Oh yeah, make sure the engine is not hot.

thats what youre SUOPPOSED to do. how have you BEEN tightening it?
Yes, this is correct. Once the oil filter seal makes contact with the ring on the block, you turn 1/3 (1/2 max, if it doesnt feel snug -- I have only had to do that on an old oldsmobile, never on a 47k mi protege5) turn after that to fully seal -- Oh, and dont forget to use your finger to rub a layer of oil on the seal to keep it fresh for 3000 before you screw it on.
When the system heats up, the seal tightens. You will do fine for as long as you need to like this. No worries about "falling off."

This is standard application for all passenger cars and trucks.

Yeah, the rubber seal actually prevents the filter from coming loose somewhat, so just hand tighten and DON'T USE tools.

LOL, I've heard more drain plugs falling off than filters (actually have never heard of one) :D

the position of the oil filter on these cars is WAY better then on the civic. at least with these its pointed up at an angle so it drains back into the engine easily. on the civic it drips all over your damn arm when you pull the filter off (gun)
