******* Oil Filter...HELP!

just though id bump this. Took me 3-4 hours to get my filter off  . I had my dealer do my oil change about 2 months ago while they had my car, and the F'in filter wouldnt budge. i tried everything my oil filter wrench just kept slippin, i broke a leather belt that i was pryin off the tranny with, i bought a strap wrench from sears 10$ didnt do a thing, and put a screw driver through it and it was like a can opener just ripped the tin so i could get my hands on it without getting all cut up. So i searched and found this thread. I ended taking the same route as linux manifold bracket off and used a big pair of channel locks. This all started because i wanted to put my front motor mount in and change my oil, I figured about 45 min job. what a pain in the ass. she hand tight now, this will never happen to me again:D while i was under there i also notice one of the bolts on my tranny was about to fall out (just got the clutch, flyhwheel, and LSD in by dealer):wtf: .When it was all over it looks like i got in a fight with a cat, my arms are all f'd up from the exhaust bracket and other sharp objects.

Auto Zone and Pepboys sell an oil filter socket that fits over the filter for $5. Attach a ratchet and you are done. Makes it really easy.

Yeah it does when it works right! I accually had his same problem of the oil filter wrenches slipping due to the filter being too tight at one point. Sux.

i got one. it kept slippin off. I tried it with my air ratchet, still just kept slippin. i even duct tape the wrench on and it still slipped. Then i drilled 2 small holes in the wrench and put nails into the filter so it couldnt slip.. so instead it just cut the filter up. I cant explain the s*** i went through, the b**** wouldnt budge.

linux knows how i feel, your post helped me alot, i came upstairs all oil'd up and searched and i read how you did it, so i did it the same and it worked:D although that intake bracket wasnt a picnic getting off either, but it came off .

WELL, I KNOW THIS IS OLD(ER), but the first time i did my oil, i switched to mobil 1, but was forced to use the "FACTORY, gorilla tightened" filter...the second time(about a month ago), i used the BIGGEST channel-locks they make, and got that biotch off,

from here on out, it'll be like 3.7 quarts of mobil one, and a purolater filter every 3000 miles

You should never use a "filter wrench". An oil filter does not need to be that tight. You should tighten it until it starts to resist, then tighten about 1/8th turn after that. Not 1/4 turn, 1/8th turn. You should never tighten it enough where you need a tool other than your bare hand to get it off.

You guys might want to check out this oil filter "wrench" that Bluepoint, (Snap-On), sells. It's got three "fingers" that come off of it and works with a 3/8" ratchet or 3/4" wrench. The more torque you apply to turn it the tighter it digs in to the filter. Has worked for me on everything from my Pro. to the big Isuzu diesel oil filters. (Almost as big around as a 2 liter soda bottle).

I acually tried one of those too. I even put like some rubber grip under it. Nothing but issues also.

Hand tight going on and when its time for it to come off the next time it feels like someone put a wrench on it. We are not talking about install, we are talking removal:cool:

haha, i actually bought one of these also on my way to buy a strap wrench, i also found out that it didnt fit. So i triend using the strap from the strap wrench but that didnt work either. It is sitting in my garage all packaged up, i have to return it, it cost 12.99 (i was desperate) Linux yours must have been on as tight as mine, i was tryin everything.

The reason i have the wrench is to get off the factory one. because the first time i change my oil it wouldnt come off either. Believe me mine are hand tight now. ;)

I have a problem with my oil filter sometimes but always manage to take it off with my hand and a piece of sand paper for extra grip. I only tighten it by hand too. It does seem like it's 100 times tighter when you try and remove it then when you put it on. I found out that it is a lot easier to change the oil when the car is cold and not hot because the metal expands. Tha hardest time I had removing the damn thing I actually crushed the filter a little. But I have never used anything but my hand and sand paper.

I hear Mazda hires guys to drive arround in public parking spaces and look for mazda vehicles, whenever they find a mazda car, they go under it and tighten the oil filter like mothaa... so they get more business in the service department. so watch out where you park.

and if you're one of the guys that got their 1st oil change free offer, your filter will be superglued when you get your freebie. only way to remove it is using their special superglue thinner, so garanteed comeback business.

:D :D

I would have had a hell of a time changing my oil if I didn't read about complaints before on this forum.

One suggestion for anyone that is having problems (and using mazda filter).

Take one of the filters to NAPA auto parts (if you have one nearby). The guy at my local NAPA went through various socket styles, the 3 point styles, and band styles.

Finally we found a band wrench that fits. And not "just barely" fits. It grabs ahold of the filter extremely well. You can also angle the handle 45 degrees (maybe more) in either direction. So it is extremely easy to remove the filter on my p5.

Basically, my oil filter wrench is the Shiznit!

If anyone still has problems, I recommend you get one from NAPA. Unfortunately, I threw away the package it came in so I don't have any model numbers. But if you need a picture, let me know and I can take one for you so you can see what it looks like.

Hell, I like to hand tighten my filter then snug it about a 1/4 turn or so with the wrench (since my hands are usually a little oily / slippery). And I NEVER had any problems taking off the filter with my oil filter wrench.

Hope this helps.

i will never need a wrench again. from now on only i tighten it. by hand!!!

You will need the wrench to loosten the filter even though you hand tightened it. It won't be hard to move this time though.

Maybe if you have the strength of a 10 year old girl.(rofl):D I have never in my life used a filter wrench. The filter is hard to get off after it has been on there for a few months, but I can always get it.
