Oil Change?

Just as an FYI, I believe the pressure specs are exactly the same for the OEM filter and the Purolator Pure One. Those you can actually look up on the purolator site. I know the bypass valve pressure are the same, and thats what I would think is more important.

I would assume the best benefit of the larger filter is the extra surface area of the filter media, and as a result less pressure loss over the life of the filter. Thats also more time before the filter starts to bypass.

On another note, I havent ever put the full four quarts in the engine, and its up to full on the stick. I usually end up with 3.5 in the crankcase, and it looks good to me. (I thought with the normal filter it was 3.4 quarts)

What year model should be referenced for the 626 V6 filter? I'm changing my oil today, and I'm gonna go with the larger filter. Just use the same year as whatever year model Protege we have?

EDIT: Better yet, how about some part #s for the v6 filter. Is the WIX part #51356?

It's the same for 2002 626 V6, the Bosch part number is 3323. The exact same filter also fits late years of Probe GT (V6). (stash)

I use the filter wrench to initially break it free but is never a hassle. I only hand tighten putting it on. Do you rub a little oil on the seal to moisten before tightening?

Don't worry about any clearance issues with the V6 filter either.. there's lots of space in and around the oil filter.

even with a oil filter wrench it still takes a hand of god
That's friggen weird. With OEM filters? Even when I forget to put oil on the seal I can get it off by hand. Tough, yeah, but definitely doable. I have an oil filter wrench for our filters but you can't actually get it up in there with my socket wrench attached to it. I've never really needed to use it anyway.

Mine's just the old school wrap style one with multiple start settings. It is not small, it's a nice sturdy one but will just make it up in the space there is to work with.

I had never really considered a K&N oil filter. I only knew of them really for air filters...

How are they for oil? Is it worth my while to pick one up?

Absolutely worth it. If you're really curious, you should cut open your oil filter after you've drained it and you'll see, like I did. With the K&N oil filter and a good full synthetic, I've gone 6 months and/or 5000 miles between oil changes. Of course, as you can probably tell, I don't daily drive my P5 and put less than 10k on it yearly, so your needs might be different than mine...(thumb)

I finally changed mine today. The oil filter and drain plug came off quite easily acually. The oil wasnt so bad on the way out but its much better now:) I used a purilator filter and 3.6 quarts of pensoil 10-w30. I didnt see at k&n oil filter at pep boys?

I use Mobil 1 and a valvoline filter and change it every 2500. I beat the hell outta my car though.

If I were gonna change the oil that often I would just use dino juice.

I change oil and filter roughly every 3000. Sometimes it's more, but I use full synthetic, so I have a buffer zone.

I use the Mobil 1 filter (supposed to better than K&N and most other brands). Part # M108

I also use Mobil 1 10w-30 synthetic oil.
