Official Exhaust Thread

Well, I had my GReddy EVO2 on my P5 since December 2007 and seems like it's time for a new exhaust. After about a year I got a very annoying rattle around 3100rpm. I usually shift before then anyway so I rarely noticed it. However now that I put on a MAM catless midpipe the damn thing rattles like crazy. The resonantor is shot and something is rattling in there from 2100rpm all over to 3500rpm. It's driving me freakin batty. After emailing GReddy asking if they could sell me just the midpipe, they quite rudely simply said "no". And while I know I could order a new resonator from Summit Racing (down the street from me) and have a shop weld a new one in, I'd rather not risk the chance of some grease monkey jacking up my exhaust (I don't let anyone work on my car) and the welds rusting out in a year I would rather just order a new catback.

So I was thinking about the Tanabe Medallion cat-back for about $400 shipped. Anyone have one and what do you think of it? Basically, a short review.

funky had one on his P5 when he had it, it is the best looking exhaust for the p5 IMO
i beleive the piping is 2.25 but your staying NA right? so smaller piping is better for torque and low end HP

Yeah- staying N/A. And I'm on a catless midpipe now so I don't need or want to open it up too much more or I'll loose more low end torque and hp.

Hi Lewis7789 and MazdaForums members. I have the axle-back version of the Tanabe Touring Medallion exhaust and love it. Medium-deep tone at low-mid rpms with NO high rpm buzz/rattle/coffee can noises. Slightly increase tone at idle...but very mild. Passes the GF test. Quick/easy install since its axle-back (30 minutes or less). Fits perfect and did not have to get upgraded urethane hangers. Used Tanabe on my past 3 cars -90 CRX, 06 Scion TC and had the same quality/results. E-mail me for pics -Sorry, I'm new to the forums/don't have a pic website to upload the pics.

Oh- a little update; I went with the CorkSport Power Series exhaust. With my OBX knock-off header it was unbearably raspy and loud. After about 2 months I cut out a section of the midpipe and clamped in a MagnaFlow catylitic converter. It sounds much better now and it took out pretty much all the raspiness. I'll try to get some cabin video and exterior drive-by video soon.

Oh what nonsense on buying exhausts. I welded up yet another exhaust, so here's what it sounds like from nothing to full throttle. Camera sucks, so in reality it's a little different. It's accompanied by a turbo whine, and the BOV doesn't sound like a bird tweet....

Also, this is much quieter then it was. It used to be open downpipe, hence why I like it. It got VERY loud inside once I gutted it so it was a little ridiculous.

boostedPR5: that setup you got there sounds pretty mean man.

i'm reviving this thread shortly cause i have my RB catback on the way. and since i couldn't really find ANY vid's of what setup i will be having, i'll go ahead and ask the forums lol. anyone running an OBX header with the mp3 RB catback with stock resinator? i couldnt find anything so if anyone throws up a damn "search" sign imma hurt ya lol.

I'm running a very similar set up... :) OBX header, SLS catless mid-pipe, stock S-pipe (off Evilmonkeys MSP (lol2) ) and a stock MSP racing beat muffler (tip cut/re welded).. it sounds good, no raspiness, nice tone.. I'll see if I can get a soundclip for you..

that would be awesome if you can get that up lol. the main thing i'm concerned about it raspyness and especially drone. (hence the reason i didnt go for the mazdaspeed axle back for the p5...heard a few clips of that with stock everything else and holy raspy/drone batman!)

Ok i might be able to get a damn good price on a Megan Racing CatBack Exhaust for my P5. i am completely stock basically. just the snorkel intake removed to straight tube and stock air box. I do want a nice sound, but yet again, i do a lot of highway driving (atleast 30 Mins each way to school). I understand that getting an exhaust is going to be loud no matter what, but im hoping this megan Racing doesnt have a terrible drone cruising at 65-75MPH.
I would prefer the Racing Beat it seems after reading this, but the site that i am buying it from (ImportImageRacing.com) My friend is sponsored by them so he gets crazy cheap prices, free 2nd day shipping all that fun stuff. But yea, thats the only exhaust they sell. Thats the problem.. havent seen many videos with the Megan... hopefully someone can help me out..

EDIT: Just messaged the owner of the site, and he said he can get Magnaflow.. so im gunna see what kind of price i can get for that =]

have you tried youtube? theres like 3 videos of my car on there with the megan
it sounds ok NA, its not loud at all if u keep both cat.'s, once u get a catless midpipe then it starts to sound mean, and is a bit loud (for some people)
i didnt like how the tip fit the bumper so i cut it to make it fit better....i would not recommend the megan at all though, i dont like mine

03.5 '5 running 4-2-1 header single IMCO high-flow cat (extra-long brick front, short brick rear for max efficiency), Magnaflow resonator/cat-back.

This setup gained 8+dynoed (DynoJet) whp. Very civilized, deeeeep tone, deeper than any other 4-banger I've heard. NO RICEY, RASPY, FART CAN BLATTING!

Emission numbers extremely low. Wouldn't change it.

Newby here.

I just installed the Racing Beat cat back on my 2002 Protege5 (bone stock, daily driver). I found it easy to install. After a few test drives, it sounds good - it has a nice, deep sound that is never too loud. I could not feel much difference on the butt-dyno (4hp on a 2800lb car is hard for me to sense), but I am very happy with it.

Maybe intake next?

^^^ What exhaust system do you have? Any chance you can shoot some more video without the case? It really muffles everything thus making the audio quality poor, and your post kind of useless. No offense.

Cant do any on the road videos with out the case for my GoPo..

Running stock manifold and stock down pipe with the cat gutted. Stock after that and i have the second cat removed. Stock resonator was replaced with a glass pack from Car Quest and im running a Goerlich Xcelerator muffler with a three inch out..
