Do notice though, the quote about out-performing the current they are talking about the Diesel motor, not the DI 2.0

As much as I would like to see more diesel options in the US I doubt it coming really soon.

Now the question is...what will the next mazdaspeed model be in the US? I am thinking the 6... as the 3 just had a 3 year run. I wish it WAS the 3 as I wont be new car shopping for another year or so, in which time the 2009's will probably be gone. Hopefully we will find out the next MS vehicle at the LA auto show.

Mazda press release:

HIROSHIMA, Japan—Mazda Motor Corporation has confirmed that the sedan version of the all-new Mazda3 (known as Mazda Axela in Japan), fully redesigned for the first time in 5 years, will be revealed at the Los Angeles Auto Show*1 on November 19, 2008.

The covers will be pulled off during Mazda’s press conference from 12:20 to 12:45 (local time) revealing the all-new Mazda3, the latest evolution of Mazda’s Zoom-Zoom spirit.

Every element of the all-new Mazda3 has been developed for heightened exhilaration, with a more refined sporty ride, top class fuel economy and quietness. Environmental and safety features, based on Mazda’s long-term “Sustainable Zoom-Zoom” vision, aim to achieve a balance with fun-to-drive. Add in a new expressive face and Mazda’s dynamic design elements, and the all-new Mazda3 is everything a driver could ask for in a sports compact.

The brand new version of Mazda’s best-selling sports compact carries forward the heritage of Mazda and the pedigree of the current Mazda3. Since its launch in 2003, the current Mazda3 has sold approx. 1.8 million vehicles*2 in over 100 countries and has won more than 90 global motoring awards*3 to date. The Mazda3 accounts for almost one in three Mazdas sold every year.

Following the world debut of the North American specification sedan with 2.0- and 2.5-liter engines at the show, the five-door hatchback version will be revealed in line with Mazda’s global sales schedule.

*1 The press days are November 19 and 20, and the public days are November 21 through 30.
*2 Currently Mazda’s top selling model globally, with one of the highest production volumes of any single model in Japan.
*3 Awards include: Car of the Year in Russia, Canada, Spain, Israel, Thailand, Hong Kong, Indonesia, etc., and European Car of the Year second place.

2010 Mazda3 Revealed

Well, that was quick. We just wrote how the next-generation Mazda3 was 90 percent complete and now it seems its a 100 percent complete. Mazda has just dropped the first official photos along with a brief press release on the 2010 Mazda3 - which will make its official debut at the 2008 LA Auto Show next month.

As you can see from the images the 2010 Mazda3 has been completely redesigned with a new front and rear fascia. The front reminds us the new 2009 Mazda6 while the rear takes some cues from the Mazda2 sedan.

The 2010 Mazda3 range-topper will get a new 2.5 liter engine (replacing the outgoing 2.3 liter). Official horsepower ratings will be announced next month in LA. Mazda will also offer the U.S. an entry level 2.0 liter. Mazda said the five-door hatchback will follow the sedan in line with Mazdas global sales schedule.

Are you kidding, 2.2 liter diesel has "superior" performance than current MPS... My ass!! But the car does look good.

It isn't much of a stretch to believe. A turbo diesel will have enormous amounts of torque. Don't tell me your going to bash diesels on one hand, but praise the disi version we have now because it's got lots of torque? (stfu)

A well designed turbo diesel combined with a six speed stick will overcome the typical problem of running out of rpms with the diesel and make it quite formidable in a straight line. Certainly able to lay the smack down on a large numer of competitors. Question remains how much improved is the handling. being fastest in a straight line only accounts for so much these days.

Yeah....too bad that rear lights resemble the new Sebring..mixed with Corolla...FAIL. The rest of the car looks great....but that rear aint working.....
