Noob Dictionary

Black MS3!
Hello everyone,

I am a former old muscle car speed freak that used to snub anything less than 8 cylinders

I have seen the error of my ways, repented and bought a shiny new black MAZDAspeed 3

is there like a dictionary for all the terms that us noobs just dont get. Terms Like BOV, ECU, SRI and the like. I thought i knew a lot about cars but i lift my hood and it looks more like an airplane engine than what im used too is there a primer to how turbo engines work?

Thanks for all the advice i already picked up by lurking around here before registering.

Probably a good idea for anyone in the know with everything, because I too find myself lost trying to figure out what everything stands for.. However in regards to the ones you have just asked:

BOV = Blow off valve for a turbo charger
ECU = Engine control unit
SRI = Short ram intake

I think these two should probably be on the list also:

TMIC - Top-mounted intercooler
FMIC - Front-mounted intercooler

I was also wondering if there was a sticky or a dictionary around for all these terms...finally figured out was FBPV (Forged By Pass Valve), jesus I was getting frustrated. White all the way...had mine for about 5 days and loving every minute of it. Just can't decide what mods to do next, there are so many.

Thanks Derek that was very helpfull!

WoW you guys rock 5 replys to some newbies question this is going to be a great site!

CEL - Check Engine Light

Took me a long time to figure that out, but now it seems obvious...

GHSA - GonnaHerpaSyphaLaids.....Warning, if your car catches this you will have no warranty..

instead of the air going through the filter through a pipe to the intake mani (IM) it has to take a longer path an a FI car.

it starts at the filter, goes through the inlet on the turbo, which the impeller is being run off the exhaust gases. that charged air, goes through the hot pipe to through the intercooler, then goes out the intercooler through the cold pipe into the IM. boom. how a turbo works simplifed. the reason for turbo lag, is because that air has to travel a long path to get to the IM, and there isnt enough exhaust pressure in the low rpms to pressurize the air charge fast enough. thus there is a bit of lag until the impeller gets going.(drive2)
