2003 Mazda Protege ES
traded my 2003 protege es for a 2007 mazda5 touring yesterday. i'll miss the protege, but the 5 is so cool. everyone calls me a soccer dad now, but i don't care. it has the room i desired, and the 5 yr old has plenty of room. he liked it when i brought it home. and the soon-to-be wifey liked it too!

Welcome to the fold, 2003proes.
I live in Los Angeles (aka car capital of the world) and for the month that I've owned my Mazda5 I still have YET to see another one on the road. (admittedly I NEVER even heard of the Mazda5 until I started looking at buying a car).

It's nice driving in an almost totally unique car.

Welcome to this group. There is a lot of good stuff the fellahs here can help with...

As per the nickname above, as you can see on my sig, you'll get over with quickly. Practicality and fun-to-drive kill anything else (lol2)

Ironically, I see them all over the place in mid-sized cities like Boise, ID and Spokane, WA. Have hardly seen a 5 in larger metro areas like Seattle, WA though... Heck, I saw another 5 in Hagerman, ID (that would the the Capital of the middle of nowhere) before we got our 5 and I was trying to explain it to the father-in-law. I was explaining away ans looked over.. there it was!

Also "soccer" moms/dad don't drive minivans. They all have Subaru Outback Wagons or Volvo XC Wagons!

July 1-14, there was a Phantom Blue MZ5 visiting and zooming by the CA Freeways S.Diego, Riverside, L.A. Disneyland, seaworld.. Too much driving had to do full tank every other day. Our local guide (bro. inlaw) had a dodge truck, so the MZ5 had to 'adjust' to the California style driving. At first I had trouble catching up, then I found the 'sweet spot' of the MZ5 accelerator pedal to zoom it faster.. Sort of like sling-shot effect. Watch out
for debris in the car-pool. Large pieces of tire rubber came flying towards then under our MZ5. lucky no damage was done.

Combination of throttle lag, and six persons aboard, The MZ5 has trouble 'jump-starting' especially on traffic light leading to an entry to the freeway. I had to 'gently floor' it and it growls a little but then the zoom-zoom follows. But we drove to L.Vegas for a weekend and MZ5 had no trouble zooming with the 'big guys'.

Took a trip down the 405/5 to San Diego for the weekend. I thought that I had a good chance to catch a glimpse of another Mazda5 in the "wild" especially since I was going past Irvine (North American HQ for Mazda)... but no such luck. It must be a "nocturnal" vehicle that only ventures out at night :)

Saw plenty of Mazda3s and 6s and one CX7 and one vintage 929.

They are hiding from you :D. In San Diego I was able to even rent one, something I've not seen anywhere else (naughty)

Welcome!!!

They are a great "car".

I actually see a few around here.

Probably cause the Mazda dealership is about 2 miles down the road. Plus everyone here can get a deal off of them cause everyone knows a ford employee, so S plans everywhere.

I don't know if it was monitarily possible, but I would have kept the pro, for fun!

I plan on driving mine (pro5), until both cars are paid off and then getting a new one and either finding a cheap miata, or keeping the pro5 to play with and get to know better.

well...day 4 and i'm lovin the 5. i thought it was the same sunlight silver as my protege, but it seems to be a little more of a sandy color. the color code is 22r. anyone know what color it is? i'm getting the roof racks installed and some other things touched up (per "due bill") on wednesday night. hope it looks a little sportier. definitley going to get windows tinted and take off pin striping. is this 2.3l engine the same as the one is the 3? and if so, is there any benfit in a cold air intake and exhaust? and, what kind of exhaust is there to keep it quiet, but improve performance? also, may mention it's an auto...

I am going on 8 weeks with my Gt..and still love driving it.. I wonder though, I often get flashed at night by other drivers.. I wonder if my headlights are blinding them? has this happened to you? I used that little dial with the numbers of passengers seated..is that supposed to help?

I think the higher the number (0-3 I think) the higher up the shine. I have mine on 0 most of the time. I think the manual gives a gauge on what setting to use based on load.

Really? I thought the opposite. I always had mine on 0 too!. Then my husband thougt the weight of cargo had to do something with it..Like the heavier the load the lights were to cast downward. Hmm? Thanks..

More people in the car the more the front end shoots up because the rear is loaded. The lights would adjust downward although I dont have that feature on any of my 5's.

I can tell you loading up a ford ranger with concrete (too much concrete) had me facing upward like I was ready to blast off into orbit and my steering wasnt worth a damn...all over the road. ;-) Nothing like being a redneck in a company truck.

eh, its easy, don't take your eyes off the road.... up is up down is down. Either way, you'll get flashed cause our lights are awesome!
