new pro5 - moon roof question

Seaduced... Does your car happen to have the subwoofer in the spare tire area? Basically what I want to know is if your car in an 03 or an 03.5.

Just a suggestion: open the rear windows while you have the moonroof open. I open all the windows and the wind noise is very minimal.

The rubber deflector that pops up is to break the wind passing over the opening. If you hold it down going 40-45 you will notice a pulsating pressure change in the cabin (and in you ears) and a low drone (similar to blowing air across the top of a bottle). Its sole purpose is to prevent that pressure change.

I don't have the wind-deflector and as long as I'm driving under 45, there is little to no noise compared to other cars I have driven, but like I said, I usually have the windows open as well.

On the highway, any moonroof is going to be loud...I usually close it or pop it up.

From the sounds of it, he's got an 03 and they didn't give him the rack. The later 03's didn't have the rack installed and it should have been in your hatch. Because of all the complaints about the noise, they pulled them out of the cars they were selling and the 03.5s didn't have any rack at all.

I believe you can take off the black runners completely if you don't want the rack and you want your car to look more like the 03.5.

Personally I like the rack, and I think it may help with the wind noise with the moonroof open similar to what the wind deflector does, but don't quote me on that.

The sticker on driver's door says car was manufactured 03/03.
yes, I do have a subwoofer in the spare tire (no charge per the window decal) .

I went to the dealer today to get the cargo tray and now
I have a 3rd degree burn on my fingers from touching the shade
handle. OUCH ! It was closed entire time. I'm sure I'm working my
A/C overtime. I must get the glass tinted up there. I searched
all over the net and can't find a definite answer to whether
it will cause shattering. Wonder how much $$ to change the glass out for UV blocking tempered glass from an auto glass place.....

Also - Sir Nuke was right - either rack or black strips on all the
cars on the lot.. I must have been on drugs that first day...

I can tell you for sure that the glass in the car even the sun/moonroof blocks alot of UV. I wear glasses with transitions lenses that get dark when exposed to UV and they are barely tinted when I'm driving, even with the moonroof shade open and the glass closed. You should have no problem tinting it though if you decide to.

My new P5 (picked it up tonight) came with the moonroof air deflector on the sticker. I wasn't real excited about it because I really don't like the looks. But driving home on the freeway I opened it up and it really makes a difference. I've been driving a Taurus w/ factory moonroof and no deflector for the last 6 years and I wouldn't ever open it on the freeway because of the noise and turbulence. This moonroof will be used a lot more. (sun)

sorry, i have no idea what you guys are talking about....my p5 has a moon roof and its fine, hardly any noise....i can have the windows up, down, with the moon roof open and the noise is not bad at all.....i would hate to put that hideous deflector on my car..... anyway, welcome to the board all the new people and hopefully we can help you out with anything you need

Keola -
When your moonroof is open - there is a black rubber seal
that runs from one side of the moonroof around the front to the other side. It is attached by a small strap on each side.
Please can you tell me - does your seal pop up or
does it stay flat?
Thanks

To Michael - congratulations ! Thanks for clearing that up about
the roofs. I'm glad I got the strips in case I want the rack later.
Please tell me if you are able to rig it somehow to keep the
seal down.

First of all, its not a seal, its a wind deflector...there is one on almost every car that has a moonroof. It serves two purposes.

One is to let air in your car...if there was no lip, the air will just pass over...so why not just leave the damn thing closed. In order for air to enter the cabin, there has to be a disruption in the aerodynamics of the top of your car.

Second is, depending on weather, speed, and how many windows are open, the wind passing over the top of the opening can cause a vacuum that is unpleasant to the ears.

I only know this because I held it down one day and happened to be going just the right speed for it to make the pressure in the cabin fluxuate and bug out my ears like I was flying on a plane.

I noticed something with the mini-deflector today. If you hold it down like 1/4" it is a lot quieter and you still don't get that weird pressure thing going on like when you hold it all the way down. When I got home I cleaned my sunroof and noticed that there are 2 spots on the bottom of the deflector that deflect air into the car. I am thinking that maybe if I block those so all the air goes over the opening that it may quiet it down some. I will try it and let you guys know. I would take a pic to show you what I'm talking about but I sent my digicam to my grandparents to take pics of our house being built. I am going to buy another one but it is on backorder till the 27th.

okay I get it , it's a delfector not a seal... in that case - can
I remove it completely without causing a leak?
That will be my last resort - first I'm also going to try to rig it somehow to stay down... Between all of us , someone has to
figure out a way.

sorry to keep resurrecting this thread but I gotta warn you
all - the rubber I wrote about is a FRIGIN SEAL !

I took off the little screws- folded the black 1/2 inch wide cord
over itself - put a small hole in the cord so the screw would
now go thru the gusseted hole, then the cord and back into
the original hole. This kept the SEAL (or as you guys wanna call it - the deflector down) down as I drove (great - no noise) but when i closed the moonroof - it no longer popped up to meet with the moonroof. I could actually see sky thru the cracks.
I took a hose and the water came right in.

Just passing along my waste of time experiment.
Guess the $50 wind deflector is going back on for good.

Back to life. I've had my ,03.0 P5 for a couple of weeks now. It has the roof rack, moon roof, moon roof deflector and no SubWoof. With the racks on traveling at 40mph with the roof open the wind noise was ridiculous. My belief was that the front roof rack was right in the wind stream. So I ordered up the blanks to fill the holes left from removing the roof racks and yanked the RRs off. Well, it's like night and day! Noise is minimal even on the highway at 70+mph, although at 80 it really wants to be shut. And no need to open the back windows anymore to release the pressure buildup.
