new light weight flywheels

i have heard that having the ring gear milled into the flywheel isn't as good b/c if it gets damaged (i know how does it get damaged???) it can't be replaced where as if it is pressed/screwed/pinned on then it can be re-placed and most that have a press type fit have a rebuild kit for thier flywheels.... just the info i have come across

repeated abuse such as repeated drag style high rpm launches or especially fierce shifts where the clutch will start to literally tear into the flywheel. i have seen examples of flywheels be cut in half by people doing idiotic things like that.

i am not talking about hard driving of the vehicle, or even running at the drag strip. more so i am talking about abusing the vehicle so don't let any of that scare you. i am talking about the people that treat every stop light and freeway as a 1/4 mile track :)

i had one in my toyota celica i loved it, it was better for acceleration, does the mazda speed clutch come with a new pressure plate? because if so i would consider getting it, i am all about flywheel and clutch, those are my two favorite parts to upgrade. could there possible be a discount for buying both at the same time, it cant be more than the coilovers i bought for my car with more noticible results, so to me it is extremely worth it and i think it would also help notice the nology wires and powercores more.

don't think there is a mspeed clutch upgrade as of yet... though there are others... you could mix and match??

the clutch comes with the new pressure plate yes. there is not really much room for discount on these parts, maybe a little but i mark them down alot as it is on thier own.

sweet, thanks for the fast response, i will have to think about getting these after i find out which flywheel is better the exedy or the fidanza, any one have any oppinions?

I was at the dealer today and picked up the mazdaspeed catalogue with the three. I posted a new thread for details, but wanted to mention there is a clutch kit for the 3 coming out. However the flywheel and clutch and supposed to be for racing only and void your warranty according to the disclaimer in the back of the catalogue. Why would you buy from mazda if it voids your warranty? The parts guy couldn't figure it out either. He thinks that I should call and find out if that is actually true because he sees no reason why a part designed by mazda for the three should void your whole warranty. It is worded wierd to confuse you. They say if you enter your car in a race your warranty is void and these parts are for racing only according to them.

I think he meant, how does the ring gear get damaged?

i think it will void your warranty on anything directly related to the parts they say that for... flywheel and cluthc = no warranty on drivetrian i can imagine though if your mirror adjustment fails i don't see why they wouldn't fix that... they are just covering their asses and bein asses in the process by creating a product with their name that if installed they won't back up... retarded... yes... its all bout them damn benjamins... they make money by selling the parts and also make money by not covering them under warranty... (jerkit)

personally i like both companies, both are known for quality. i personally use the fidanza. if you can get me a part number for the exedy model i can get you the price you want :)

hmm if anyone could find out for sure if flywheel is or is not included in your warranty that would be awesome.

according to the mazdaspeed catologe if you use thiers they don't cover it or anything associated with it... so i would assume if you use some one elses you are on your own their as well....

well i'm thinking the flywheel isn't covered under warranty anyways. because i can't see them covering a stock clutch under warranty considering its guranteed to die.

EXEDY has had a Lightweight DOHC Billet Steel Flywheel out for the mazda3 for months now.

Here is their listing of it:
EXEDY Racing Flywheels are made from solid one-piece billet chromoly steel or chromoly steel forgings. They are specifically designed to reduce weight and inertia for better engine response. Most incorporate special design features to enhance the air flow that cools down your clutch. The ring gear teeth are milled onto the flywheel unlike an aluminum flywheel where the ring gear is pressed onto the flywheel and have the possibilities of seperation. All flywheels have passed rigorous testing standards in which they are tested to 15,000 rpm without problem.
Listed price is $341.10

I need to do some reading up on them before I decide.
I do know that you would be better off getting everything done in the tranny all at once.

do you have a website with the exedy flywheel? i cant seem to find any product on the exedy website

The only problemk I for-see coming up from doing a lighten flywheel would be one thing . . the DBW TB!! Its already a pain in the ass now to do quick precicse shifts. Think of how hard it will be to time the gas and clutch when you are acceling that much faster. But then again, maybe this might help with response . . . enough to make up for the TB lag?
