New EGT readings

Well, here's what I got with my new Greddy EGT (mounted in the downpipe, right outside the turbo outlet).

Cruising 75 mph. 660C / 1220F

Rich, right?

Car also seems to idle a little rough and expell a little blue smoke at idle and a bunch if you hit the gas. (smoke) (notcool)

Fuel is a Vortech FMU 12:1 with an inline pump right before the fuel rail. Is the pump raising the pressure causing the rich condition while cruising and at idle? (I'm still waiting to receive my fuel pressure gauge, so I can check that.)

At WOT, the temperature doesn't really change. Maybe goes to 680C / 1256F.

I'm curious. I have a 10:1 pill for the Vortech. Should I use that? I do notice that the car pulls much better at partial throttle than at full throttle as well (too rich I'm guessing).

The rough idle bugs me a bit, but changing the FMU "setting" won't help that.

Does anyone know what I should be running for fuel pressure at idle, cruise and under boost? (I'll need that data soon.)

Well, the good news is the car is running rich rather than lean! :)

you should be running no more than 43 psi at idle

what do you mean BLUE SMOKE?????
burning oil????

my experience with this type of rising reg should show around 5-6 psi for every pound of boost increase max for your set up
i dont know about this egt reading bieng rich
it sounds right to me
but ask terry since hes the one that knows about this kit
you really need a wide band o2 and a fuel pressure gauge that you can tee into while driving and monitoring the fuel pressure
like i suggested before

Yeah, I ordered the fuel pressure gauge, it just hasn't arrived yet. Go figure, it wasn't in stock. But I did listen and I'm trying to get one.

Man I hope it isn't oil that's burning. . .don't do that to me. Now I'm gonna lose sleep!

I think it is just running rich. . .but now I'm wondering. Time to go check the oil. Can't be doing that can it? It seems to run fine, besides what could I have done to cause it to burn oil already? Now I'm frightened!

listen blue smoke is a sign 99% of the time of oil burning
now it could be valve guide or even worse RINGS
sorry man i dont mean to scare you but please make sure that in the day light you have some punch the gas and check this out
it will be serious
if it is oil burning it will show up as exxcesive HC emmisions
get it checked out by a tech to make sure
how many miles you got and what kind of oil are you using?

im watching...

hmmmm are you sure is blue smoke???
could be anything tha perfworks said, plus,it could be the turbocharger too.

Check the intake pipe, if you see any deposits, its the turbocharger.

That doesnt sound good, i hope you figure out the problem soon.

Where am I supposed to check? The pipe on the outlet of the turbo?

I'd love to know how I could have messed something up already. :wtf:

That would be my luck. Anything that would have caused this? I don't know that I've overboosted or anything and I seem to be plenty rich on the A/F according to the EGt (which was the reason I started this post, but now it is off on a nice so nice tangent). This is really gone ruin my day / month / year if it is something big.

I guess I'll go mess with it and check it out. Yippee! I alsways wanted to know more about it (the engine that is).

is the system intercooled?
both end of the piping if so
or else outlet of turbo compressor side for ANY signs of oil
throttle body etc
are you sure it is blue or black?

Someone mentioned it to me Friday night. I didn't really see it firsthand.

System is intercooled. I posted before about some oil leaking from the turbo. There still is some leakage there (between the compressor side and the bearing). It is worse now than when I posted the picture on the "oil dripping from turbo" thread.

There is a "good" amount of oil on the outside of the tube coming from the compressor now (just crawled out from under the car). Not sure what is going on, but the oil on the turbo doesn't seem to be coming from any of my fittings (both the in and the out are dry and look very clean). I haven 't looked inside the IC pipes yet (probably won't get around to that tonight).

I'll check the car out tomorrow and see what the smoke is like firsthand. Then we'll go from there I guess. . .damnit! I do appreciate your help and questions (I'm very new to the whole turbo thing).

Beavis,
I am glad to hear that you are running the egt:D
In regards to your numbers, you are exactly where you should be at. You are running a tad rich but not excessively by any means. Perfect for a turbo car.
After factoring in that you are running at the dp you are actually running 780c if it were in the runner and that indicates an excellent a/f nothing to worry about.
About the smoke you will need to verify it yourself but it does not seem like an internal problem whatsoever. It is common on new turbo's to do that sometimes so no need to freak out. And if it is oil than 99% its your turbo oil seals getting to much pressure and this can be easily alleviated by a restricter in the feed line.
Some protege's run a bit higher oil pressure than others. This is even evident on the MSP's and its not a big deal;)

Ummm. . .I'd love to buy you a beer (I'm on my 4th now. . .) :) Anyway, you are making me feel a whole lot better.

So, where do I get a restrictor? I'd love to get one of these and put this issue to bed.

Also, my EGT gauge doesn't even read at idle (so I don't even get past 300 C at idle. Once I start driving, it is running between 400 and 500 in town, but as soon as I stop it goes back to 300. I thought it would be higher.

Thats fine the egt is only good for WOT readings. Use the rspeed meter at partial throttle and make sure its at rich since the egt is real tricky to read at partial.
In regards to the restrictor first verify if your smoke is actually blue and if it is than you will need to take off the line and utilize a restrictor) I have some on order and will send you one if you need it.........thanks for the offer on the beer but I only drink odoul's I cant drink beer because of cardiac problems it causes me. I cannot drink any stimulants like beer and coffee. So I have to resort to other things like sex:D

You drink sex?....

:wtf:

You beat me to that one. . . LOL

No beer or stimulants. . .no caffeine. . .oh for the love of gawd.

Anyway, thanks.

I've noticed that it did have a little blue smoke one day when I arrived home, but the next day I looked and saw nothing. Seems like there is no smoke when I start the car up and idle, but there is some when I get on it or have just parked the car.

I will definitely need one since I was leaking oil out the sides of the turbo before this anyway (whole different thread but same topic).

So. . .Doc. . .the car is going to make it then?

Melicha8, did you do all those mods yourself? I'm thinking about a clutch and flywheel, and maybe even the motor mounts.

I did install the turbo, so I'm not completely useless, but then again, we haven't verified that it is all in there correctly, yet! :)
