new computer q's

i just did that though. i think its actually the design of connecting with a link from outlook, not a comptuer speed thing.

if your running fine temp wise then nothing. It will just make it run cooler if its operating fine. When u overclock the processor runs hotter so u need to cool it down better, but if u arent running hot/ or overclocking its just for bragging.

i think when i reboot my comp after leaving it on all day or whatever its normally in the 110-120s (at least thats what the bios says)

also, upgrading from a 2500+ to a 3.0 ghz P4 is not worthwhile IMO, it will be only marginally faster 99% of the time

Yep, that's true. Save the money to upgrade the RAM and video card.

Yeah, the temps are fine. Since you have it apart, might as well do some cleaning of the CPU heatsink/fan. Also, if you haven't used arctic silver thermal paste, I highly recommend getting a tube. Increases the thermal conductivity between the CPU and the heatsink.

if my temps are ok, why bother? i will clean eveyrthing out though for sure.

what about those ram coolers (prolly worthless) etc etc?

this is the case i bought (nothing fancy):

your thoughts on the best way to keep it cool (if any more so than i am right now) are appreciated. also some of the things i could get from:

www.1coolpc.com

i used to shop there before when it was called 3dfxcool or something. anyhow, let me knwo if there is anything from there or anything else you suggest...

LOL, That's just me. I'm just used to putting arctic silver on CPUs because I overclock my CPU. For all electronic stuff, heat is not a good thing, so $6 to lower the temps is not much. Besides, that tube can probably last you 50+ applications.

To keep the case temps cool, u may want to buy 2 case fans. One in front of the case and another in the back.

Also, since you have a case with a window, u can try getting those cold cathode kits and UV sensitive cables.

And yes, don't bother with the RAM coolers

If you plan on getting a lot of fans, make sure they are low decibal fans. If you have room in that case, consider getting a 120mm fan. It will push a lot of air without having to spin at a higher rpm. If not at least get 80mm fans. Also, consider creating a good airflow throughout your system. You don't want cables and stuff everywhere blocking airflow and keeping the heat inside. Don't try overclocking if you aren't familiar with it. You don't want to accidentally fry all your components.

I would put as many fans as you possibly could, I have 2 intake fans on the front of the case blowing over the hard drives, one on the side panel blowing directly over the CPUs and on the back panel I have 2 exhaust fans and the PSU has 3 exhaust fans

anyway, the CPUs hardly hit 102F under full load, these are 2 XP 2400s, so your 120s are a bit on the high side

CAN U SPEAK LOUDER? I can't hear you over your fans! :D

KpaBap, you must have gone deaf awhile back. I couldn't stand all the noise from my Vantec Tornado's...so I went down the watercooling route. Now I can finally sleep with my computer on.

i am at 113F on a retail HSF AMD 1700+. hmm. perhaps more arctic silver is needed. i guess i always put too thin of a layer because im afaid of putting too much on and having it glob to hell..hrm.

ok i know i have a really cheap motherboard, is it worth upgrading THAT while im taking s*** apart? im not using raid or whatever and for some reason i just cant see the differences between some ofhte more expensive boards and the one i have...

Biostar USA

If you don't overclock and it's working perfectly fine, then don't bother. More expensive board just give you more overclocking features and maybe other bells and whistles like RAID, Firewire, SATA, better onboard sound

ok cool. did you see that little duct system they have on 1coolpc? is that worth it? i just get concerned sometimes because i leave the computer on all day...

anything else you suggest (since im on a buying binge this weekend)?

That duct does work, but it's nothing more than a dryer hose that is made to fit better. As long as you have decent flow thru the case, leaving the computer on 24/7 isn't a big problem.

Dude, if you just want to spend money, get some beer or just send me a check :D

Your computer is FINE.
