New Bose Stereo Problems

Picked up my 8.5 GT on 2 July. I think the build date was in late March. I have tried to replicate the radio issue but haven't heard any bass dropout. I am in the clear it seems.

Lucky man. The quickest way to check if you are affected is to turn the volume from 34 to 35.. If there is a large difference there, then you are affected. Hopefully not :)

The headunit is in at the dealership. Going in later this week to get it taken care of so Ill report back on the difference. Cant wait!

I just got my car last Wednesday and I have an appointment to get the stereo looked at tomorrow. Call me crazy, but with all these issues one would think the dealer would check it BEFORE the car is sold. Now I have to drive 50 miles for them to tell me they're going to have to order parts.

I went through the same bulls***... drive 40 miles so they could "diagnose it" even though its the same damn issue with EVERY 08.5 sold. Hence the TSB. I tried telling the service mgr if he could just order it so I could avoid two trips... no dice. So 160 miles of driving for this bulls***.

Why dont you guys just try going to a closer mazda dealer? The one I purchased my MS3 at was 50 miles from my house. Needless to say I dont bring my car there for service. I bring it to a dealer 20 minutes away. If I wanted to there is a dealer 3 miles from my house. I dont use them because they are not a speed dealer, but for a TSB, I imagine any mazda dealer would do. Plus the fact that I think the regular mazda 3 has the same issue, so really any dealer should be able to swap it out. It takes about 5 minutes.

I just got the call, my new radio is in. Made an appointment for tomorrow morning to get it put in. YES!!! I only had to wait 3 weeks instead of 8-10!

I asked the speed dealer service manager I bought it from if my local non-speed dealer could fix the problem and he said no.

I dont understand why it would make a difference. Not for the radio. Mazda is still footing the bill in the end.

I would be inclined to ask the non-speed dealer the same question. I might not bring my speed to them for something more serious, but for the radio it seems like either should be able to do it.

Is anyone with a VIN outside the TSB range having stereo issues? The TSB say VINs from JM1BK******100088 to JM1BK******141738
(produced from January 7 to March 28, 2008) are the applicable models.

I have an 8.5 GT that was built very recently. My VIN number falls above the range of the TSB for the radio issues so the TSB should not apply to my car. I haven't noticed any bass cutout yet at any volume setting. I do now notice what seems to be a larger than expected volume increase from 34 to 35. It is not a huge jump but maybe 2-3 units more than expected. However, I am not sure if that is just my mind playing tricks on me. Sound quality sounds fine but not outstanding. I hear all the highs/mids/lows but not at an awe inspiring quality, especially from the door speakers which seem sub par. Quality of sound doesn't seem to waiver with ALC or volume setting.

Do I just need better speakers for my doors to bring it up a notch in quality?

Man, I would see if you can get them to replace it. That jump at 34-35 is not normal. I bet since you have that jump that you've got some quality issues there as well, just might not be able to tell unless you had something to compare to. After that replace the door speakers... It does make a HUGE difference.

got the new head unit put in today. definitely much better than it was. both the bass and treble stayed consistent where they were supposed to be instead of cutting in and out and sounding distorted. the volume is more stable too so it gets louder at lower levels than 35 so that way there isnt that retarded jump from 34 to 35. definitely worth the 4 week wait.

Ours was also replaced yesterday. Only took two weeks to get it done. I think the sound is much better and the first thing I did was to run the volume up through the problem area with no issues...

I'm happy

Finally had mine replaced today... what a difference. It sounds better at all volumes according to my ear dyno. The car now has zero problems.

BTW, I love this car.

Had the dealer (Brown's Alexandria) check out my Bose today. I had only the 34-35 volume jump and they could just barely hear it. I also expressed my concern with the overall sound quality. They ordered a replacement HU without hesitation. My VIN falls outside the TSB range too.

I am not sure if I should get mine changed. Picked up my new 2008.5 GT today at the dealership and tested the stereo. It sounds fine to me but I had nothing to compare it too. When I turn on the ignition, it says "Bose Sound" on the display. My VIN# falls outside the indicated on the Service Bulletin. I even checked the software and it has the latest update (Ver. 1.01M3Cu) as indicated in the Service bulletin. I really can't tell at this point if there is any major diff in volume from 34 to 35.

Should I still try to get the HU changed?

If you can't hear the difference in sound, then you have a perfectly fine radio.

There was a significant jump in volume from 34 to 35. It was extremely noticeable.

I've had my 08.5 GT for about a month and a half now. Just checked the issue thoroughly and seems as if I am in the clear.

I am not a 100% sure but I think that the volume goes up a little more than normal going from 34 to 35. Other than that everything else checks out fine.

1. My car does not fall under VIN#'s JM1BK******100088 to JM1BK******141738

2. When the ignition is switched on, the Stereo displays "BOSE SOUND"

3. With ignition switch in ACC or ON position and audio system on, I checked the software version of the audio system by pressing and holding AUDIO CONT knob and Preset 1 button. The software version displayed is Ver.1.01M3Cu

Based on above information, I should be clear but I still think the volume changes quite a bit from 34 to 35. This doesn't bother me but I am curious about the HU they have been replacing. Is that a lot better?

I will never know till I can compare mine to someone who has the new HU. Anyone near philly/delaware area with the new HU?
