New 2017 CX-5 Revealed

I was tempted to wait for the '17 for some of the new features - could care less about power lift or the reclining seats, but the added soundproofing and rear vents seem helpful - but I'm glad I went for the 16.5. Both because it saved me a bundle and I could get it now, but also because the 16.5 still has a CD player, which is a very important feature for me. I use the radio/CD every day, while I can't think of too many times the rear seats would need to recline or that my hands are so full that I couldn't just touch the rear gate and open it by hand.

⋯ I certainly don't hate the new CX5. If I was buying in June, I'm quite sure it would be my pick. I was quite annoyed that mine doesn't have rear vents. My last 3 cars have had them. I may regret not having them come summer.
Same here. New CX-5 would be my choice if I'm in the market for a new compact CUV. :)

I've been critical on certain things which are available in all other competitors but Mazda refuses to offer them to US customers. Rear AC vents is one of them. When I raised this issue, I got all kind of "attacks" and excuses to support Mazda not to offer this simple and cheap rear AC vents. The most ridiculous one was there are rear vents underneath the front passenger seats which can be used as AC vents for rear passengers! Those vents are designed for heating purpose, not for cooling! They're down low to the floor and they're not adjustable on air direction!

A friend of mine took my advice and bought a 2016 CX-5 GT a while ago. His wife's first compliant about the new CX-5 was why there's no rear AC vents as her grandson got in the rear seat of her brand new CX-5 very excited but only to find out there's no AC vents to cool him down!

I can get cold air through the floor vents to the rear on mine, more than enough for me.

But i can see were in a really hot climate rear face vents would be useful if you travel in the rear. I never do and in the UK is very rare that it hot, usually the opposite.

We are waiting for the 2017 CX-5 to be released. We've never owned a Mazda before, but with a kid on the way, I am definitely interested in a vehicle that will be a family car without being a "family car." The CX-5 seems to fit that bill perfectly. It will be a good daily driver upgrade for my wife, and we can feel much safer with our kid in it as compared to the current Honda Fit she drives. I have ridden in and looked at the first generation CX-5, and from what I can see, the second version is quite a major upgrade. Better looking (in my opinion), better sound insulation, higher quality interior, rear AC vents, heads-up display, floating LCD screen instead of the "recessed mini-CRT look," better seats, and a diesel option that will likely get nearly 50 mpg on the highway.

Interior temps can exceed 150 degrees in the summer sun here, but actually never had have any complaints about rear seat cooling. I just direct a center stack vent there.

I think rear seat vents are more of those perceived comfort items. Modern car interior designers model airflow through computational methods and place vents accordingly.

That's what I have to do in Texas summer if there're passengers in the rear. But I really hate to give up the front center vents re-directed to the rear as I usually want both to cool me down! Rear AC vents resolve that issue for me. :)

Still hate the Chrome trim. Why? Why Mazda?

I wonder if models without Bose get a spare donut?

One of the many reasons I liked the CX5 was because it doesn't have the Chrome trim around the window. Seriously, what is with that design decision? Look around. Rogue has it. CRV has it. Cherokee has it. Rav4....awesomely.....does not. Now Mazda...has half of it?!
Why do car companies think we want (fake, even) chrome?

thanks for the post on the new colors. they look awesome! The chrome i think looks fine. That's not going to stop me from getting the latest and greatest version! Like I would say the chrome trim is such a big deal that instead ill get a 2016.5 for the same price now as when the 2017 is released just to not have chrome trim and give up all the new features and improvments on the 2017.. sure (dunno)

Didn't tell you not to buy it. Didn't say I wouldn't.
Asked a question.....WHY?!?!?

They make decisions on styling and trim based upon current trends. A lot of upmarket European brands are using chrome accents and you can see some European influence in the interior. Is it real chrome? I hope not, it is a proper pain unless it is very expensive. Plastic chrome is perfectly adequate.

I think the red button is an auto eject button for the rear passengers.

Any video showing how the rear seat set back? Overall, looks like a nice upgrade.

just saw a new Rav4 on the road, it has the same half chrome trim like the new CX-5 except a lot thinner and not as noticeable...... actually the lowered belt line and sideview of the new CX-5 resembles very close to the Rav4, except the Mazda looks better IMHO....

also Mazda did away with the little triangular quarter glass panel for rear passenger doors, replaced with a triangular black plastic:

  1. Didn't like the black smoke came out initially from the exhaust pipes like old diesels.
  2. Saw CD/DVD player again but don't think we'll get it in the US.
  3. Saw front and rear fog lights with indicators. We won't see the rear fog light and any indicators.
  4. Saw Side View Camera feature with button in action but we won't get it.
  5. TPMS button has a light.
  6. Saw i-stop button and I miss that.
  7. AC has a "Eco" mode!
  8. At front center console, 12V power socket moved out and 2 front USBs moved in.
  9. Electrical Parking Brake finally added the "Auto Hold" function.
  10. Has 2 rear USB ports hidden in the rear center arm rest.
  11. Saw heated rear seat buttons but I don't think we'll see them in the US.
  12. Power liftgate acted pretty fast with an inside switch / button which is a welcome feature.
  13. Finally saw Rear AC Vents available.
  14. Bose sub-woofer in spare tire area, and 2 tweeters on A-pillars, are very nice added speakers which should improve Bose sound quality a lot! But we lost spare tire for sub-woofer and I wonder why Mazda couldn't make both co-existing like in CX-3 and CX-9?
  15. JDM style low-profile rear seat headrests look different from old pair. So we can't reuse our old pair for new CX-5!
  16. Gas filler door release moved to front dash area next to hood release level.
