NEVER, NEVER, NEVER, Again...

I tried the paint your own headlight thing, and I just simply couldnt do it. i followed the instructions to a "T", and everything went well up until the oven. I still followed the directions, but only had the headlight assembly in the oven for about 3 minutes before pieces of the headlight began to melt...fortunately, everything that melted shouldnt affect the way it installs back into the car, but it did melt a flat portion into the upper part of the headlight itself, which you shouldnt be able to see when the hood is shut. so i hurried up and took it out of the oven, and then i was like well i already went this far, might as well try to take it apart since nothing major was ****** up, and my wife and i both couldnt pry it apart with knives, screwdrivers, and our hands. in the how-to, it seems like it should come right apart, and although the glue was pretty soft (as it was sticking to the screwdriver), that b**** wasnt seperating...but i was not about to put it in the oven longer to see if i could melt the glue further...if anyone really gives a s*** about my **** up, ill take some pictures of the damaged areas for you to see...im not saying dont do this mod, but i am saying that whoever wrote the how-to obviously didnt have as much glue or as strong of glue as i seemed to have...ahhh im pissed, now i gotta wake up early and put my bumper back on...

275 sounds high guys, car paint would bake on around 175. my sisters bf is a professional car painter, thats the highest temp he bakes at

thanks, but yes of course...besides broil is on the same knob on my stove so it would either be one or the other...hey 275 is just what the how-to stated...

right. hmm. is your oven more powerful? gas? electric? prolly he didnt take into account different ovens :(

yea, no problem..btw, you CAN see the small melted portion, though you probably wouldnt notice if i didnt tell you (at least, i hope so, it might be worse in the daylight)...i went and put them back on...i have no clue about what would cause the mishap, the oven is electric btw

Ghost was at Spoolin's this weekend..he might catch this..I'll try and let him know about it. There are a lot of things that could have gone wrong. Temp, placement, different oven...suxxx that it failed for you. I was a little scared when Ghost used my car for the how-to but it went off without a hitch. There must have been a major problem for it to start melting the plastic. It never came anywhere close to that on my lights.

the sad thing was, when i put the light in (i placed it JUST like he had his in the picture), the little red light on my oven was still on, indicating it wasnt even AT 275 yet, and was still heating up. i might need to get some CF eyelids or something now to cover up that bad area at the top...but maybe the eyelids wont even fit on now...argh...does anyone know where there are like gray eyelids or something? i could use the paint from paintscratch.com and try to paint them myself, or i guess i could go cf to match my graphite wheels. argh!

yes, pls go to the hoe-to forum and read the thread entitled somethin like balckout headlight or jdm headlight conversion.

Anyway this is why I will ONLY use an electric heat gun when I start tryin this stuff. I want to be in control of the heat placement and amount.

Well Ill be doin my high beem and fog angel eyes, black jdm conversion, city lights and painting the upper bar on the grill at the same time in the first 2 weeks of september after I drive back down from WA to AZ.

Uh, I baked my MSP headlights for 15minutes at 275 with no melting at all... I don't know why you had problems..

There are several black tabs which hook over the headlight glass... Did you unhook those before you went off pulling the light apart? It will *not* come off unless you unhook them all.

=(

that sucks..the oven is the best way to get even heating though.

the other alternative would be a heatgun or blowdryer...you would have had to slowly heat all aorund and slowly pry with a screwdriver.

now i'll have to be super super when i do mine

hwo long where they in there?
