Nice! Today is gonna be chock full of guitar playing for me. Playing the wedding ceremony for James and Justine. Remember them? James makes the apple pie moonshine. I didn't procrastinate, but I am kind of a nut when it comes to practicing until I'm happy. Sometimes I let it consume my life. The last 4 days, I've not been able to pick up a guitar. Time to make up for it!

Finally installed the seat lowering brackets. Now I can wear my helmet with the roof up, will be nice for raining autox days and I can enroll in some HPDE track days.

There have been a few companies claiming to have the latest generation of the rotary engine. Most try to target the small engine market (generators, tractors, etc) but they fizzle out when the funding dries up. The reason Mazda's rotary works is because it is so simple. Sure, seals wear out, but they aren't all that difficult to replace. Sure, the gas mileage is bad...but all of these designs on paper have no hard evidence their efficiency will be better. If it truly was the future of combustion engines, then everyone would be dropping what they are doing and trying to design their own. Everyone including GM was working on these designs in the 70's and look how many actually made it to production. None except those built by Mazda. Mazda didn't famously kill the rotary engine. They are simply waiting for the market to WANT it again. Right now fuel economy is on everyone's minds and the government has made it every auto manufacturer's top priority. Once things settle down and/or their engineering team has a break through we'll see another rotary.

Hammered at work. By the end of today I will be up to ~54 hours since saturday morning, likely to hit 80 by end of day Friday. Cramming to get a project done and handed off before my first 2 week vacation with my wife, ever.

Pretty much. There is a huge list of aspects to the Wankle rotary that make it less desirable for emissions and economy, and Mazda has developed solutions for very nearly all of them. Once they finish with all the SkyActive updates (hugely busy with them), they will have to to start putting it into action.
- Engine thermal balance problems reduced with all-aluminum
- wasted fuel/air mixture because rotor is too wide solved with returning to 12A rotor widths
- high RPM required to get moving reduced by increased torque from the above point plus greater eccentricity (more stroke, basically)
- inefficient spark plug placement and stragety solved by laser ignition
- poor sealing has been improved with new methods
- better catalytic converter technology lowers the engine's raw emission threshhold needed
- SkyActive stuff can carry over for increased compression ratios, leading to yet more torque and efficiency
- lighter chassis/bodies will further help to improve gas mileage and acceleration performance
etc...

Mazda will do it, they just needed time and money. They have the money now, setting record profits thanks to SkyActive, and now just need the time.

well the day has finally arrived! moving into the new digs 7/6. finishing up a few things to get inspections complete. i'll post some pics after we get settled. getting a quote this week for the 3 car wide driveway...i'm hoping it's not more than 8k...so we can have a fall meet!

All very good points. There is that small market that wants it NOW but obviously not enough for them to start production. I agree, they didn't famously kill it either, the market wasn't there so they cut their losses and as you said are waiting.

Learned some new things from your post too. I don't know much about the rotary but it does intrigue me. And the popularity of the SkyActive design is def. good for the future of the rotary.

Hey all, back from Watkins Glen, great time as usual.

Finally back on WiFi, visiting some friends in Philly. Been having a great time on our trip. Watkins Glen was awesome! A picture perfect weekend! Glad we had the bikes because that track is huge! Definitely gonna try to make it back out there next year. Just wish we had a sports car for those parade laps! Amanda started freaking out when the tires on the CX9 started squealing. I also hit like every rumble strip I could but I chickened out on the outer strip of turn 1.
