NEMOC Random BS Thread

The Bulls are on the verge of being ousted but mercifully my cable provider doesn't offer WGN so I'm spared the agony of watching the Cubs on a daily basis.

In other news, 'tis a sad day. TB broke and both #2 and #3 cylinders were damaged (so much for non-interference). Rough estimate to re-build the top end is $2000 but then I know the bottom end is original and more than likely will have some oil consumption issues. Not quite sure what I'm going to do just yet. :`(

wow, i was hoping it was the fuel pump fuse...ya, i guess we know now it's an interference engine after all...i changed my tb at 150k and it looked like it was ready to go any day...sorry jeff...

To be honest... it could be a non-interference engine when it was new. After many miles, the valve springs weaken... they may have dropped just far enough to get hit. I was talking to my dad just a little while ago about it. He said that even "non-interference" engines still have a potential for damage. The only true non-interference engine that he can think of that uses a timing belt was the Volvo red block. My sister had a 95 Neon with the SOHC 2.0. non-interference engine... lost the water pump, shaved the timing belt's teeth off... 4 bent valves.

it probably realized it was a neon.. and promptly killed itself.

Very, VERY true story. Back when I first met my current wife (what, it's technically correct!), she was driving a Neon. It killed itself within 6 months.

Oh i know. Just had to throw in my obligatory VW joke.

really ironic since I hang out mostly with VW and Audi guys lately...

Jeff .. get a used mazda3 ($7~8k) ... I haven't driven my MSP in a year, ever since I got VW CC, but I still want to keep it lol

I introduce Mary as my first wife. She usually tells them I'm her last husband.

Sorry to hear Jeff. Sucks big time.

Starting work today. Back in the MH, feels great to be back finally.

good! we need proteges in this group! :D. depending on how the next ms3 looks i may spring for one, but id still want to keep the p5 around!

i did my t-belt at 145k and it still looked pretty damn good. didnt see any cracking in the belt itself or anything. i bought the car at 75k and there was no record of it being done ahead of time

Whoa, that's pretty cool Sean! So Phen is currently over Canuckistan, eh?

Had to lol at the VeeDub jokes.

Mark, you and me both were hoping it was related to the fuel pump!

Phen, what your dad said seems very logical. Guess age and wear and tear got the better of me.

Tony, I've been looking into something used but going tbh, having trouble with letting the car go. Thinking if I spend a couple of grand between a long block and labor, at least I know the car I have vs. potentially buying someone else's issues. Of course this means I have in the back of my head that the body (rusting), trans and other engine components have 173K miles on them and have the potential of going at anytime. But seeing that I have little play room in the budget to take on a car payment I'd be looking at dipping into savings to pay cash for something which would give me a budget of about $5K, I could go higher but honestly wouldn't want to pull out more. So do I pull out $5K and chunk it down on a new car to lower the payment and make things tight for a little while, invest ~half of that down payment into my car and hope I can get 3yrs or so out of it with minimal maintenace repairs, dive in head first and buy a used car for $5K and hope for the best?

Any other thoughts/opinions are more than welcome!

I don't know what you could get for $5k total used that wouldn't be much better than your p5 with a new engine.

edit: why not try to find another cheaper p5 and use your current car as a parts car?

That's my dilemma right there! Without making some kind of monthly payment what would I end up with vs. my car with a new engine?

Hmmmmm, that didn't cross my mind. Thanks for the tip. ;)

Hey! Where in the heck is everybody? It's been quiet in here.

Test drove the 2014 6 last night, nice car! Looking at possibly leasing one vs. getting mine fixed. Salesman said they'd take it on a trade but I need to get it towed to them to look at it and he guaranteed me $500 minimum for it. Kicker is, I have around $400 alone in the tires I put on the car in March, plus the other goodies I'd like to try and sell to make a little bit of money. Ugh! So thinking about getting a used engine and swapping it over to get her on the road and then I can part out and trade it in for a little more.

Mornin all, ya the 6 is nice! I vote for fixing her up, part out the good stuf then sell it out right. The trade value will be low compared to selling it yourself....unless you just don't want the hassle.
Looking forward to some nice weather, top down today! Sat I install my stealthy IC, do some paint maint. And install a couple of goodies. Looking forward to mid oh and the glen next month! Got the mount washington hill climb too, 6/8! Busy month coming up!
Have a zoom zoom day!
