NEED HELP with Guage cluster

I just bought a salvaged Protege LX 2002, and my first Mod was white guage faces, but I broke the temp needle.

I bought a MSP guage cluster for a junk yard, and it will be here next week.

Can I just switch the cluster with my old one OR do I have to disasemble the whole thing and switch the faces with the needles?????????

it is plug and play

The mileage is stored in the gauge unit itself however -- so switching out the whole cluster is going to change your total milage.

i changed my entire cluster without affecting the mileage, if you take the cluster out, and put a new one in two weeks later, the cluster will read what it did when you took it out.

this is wrong...mileage is stored onboard the clusters eprom chip

yeah, for some reason i dont see them making it that easy for someone to commit odometer fraud. it has to be stored in the ecu.

You guys should really read the FAQ...Mileage is stored onboard the cluster. Period. I did a cluster swap myself. so unless you think my '00 Protege has 8000 miles on it, it aint stored in the ECU. If you buy a new cluster from the dealer the do an odometer disclosure statement, so correct mileage can still be recorded

totally forgot to make that point. ecu can be swapped and mileage stays the same....it's actually harder in a protege to fake the mileage than in older cars...then you can simply roll back the odometer

hmmm swap the cluster mileage changes, swap the ecu, mileage stays the same....where is the mileage stored again ?? (braindead

I can verify as well that mileage will change when swapping out clusters. I put a LX cluster in my 2000 DX and the mileage changed. As for the ECU, mileage stays the same. I have a P5 ECU in my MP3 right now and nothing changed.

I changed clusters in my car too...mileage is in the cluster...what i did to keep my mileage correct was completely disassemble the 2 clusters and move all the new gauges over to my old cluster, only keeping the odometer since you can't take it off that circuit board. all the gauges can be removed though and switched over.

not on a dx cluster...the circuit board will not support the new guages..you have to just swap the whole thing out and deal with the new mileage...legal thing to do is visit the DMV and do a mileage statement

so I can get the cluster with a tach, and put the tach on mine and use my cluster?

never mind, I just saw the last reply (smash)

He said its an LX, so it should work, seeing as how i have a 2002 LX as well and did it.

NGD, did the cluster that came w/ the car have a tach? As long as it does then you can switch the gauges
